At Illumina our mission is to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome. Genomics continues to transform the standard of care and we are looking for a strong strategic business development individual to secure strategic partnerships advancing Illuminas adoption and reach within the Greater China Region which includes Mainland China Taiwan Hong Kong and Macau. The focus of this role will be on a spectrum of strategic deals with a broad range of players including biopharma diagnostic developers technology companies and/or academic and translational research institutions. This is a highly visible externally facing role that requires strategic thinking creativity enterprise mindset and the ability to turn complex technical details into strong proposals.
The Business Development Lead Greater China will champion the partnering strategy definition in collaboration with key stakeholders and will drive the evaluation and execution of strategic partnerships aligned with this strategy. This position is based at Illumina China Headquarters in Shanghai reports to the head of clinical and international business development and is within the Corporate Development & Strategic Planning (CDSP) team.
Position Responsibilities:
Research and identify new business opportunities that would grow Illuminas product ecosystem and commercial reach in the region in a scalable way.
Create communicate and implement actionable strategy recommendations and playbooks for partnerships in collaboration with regional leadership and functional teams including commercial regulatory operations legal and other relevant functions.
Proactively build funnel of opportunities for key strategic partnering areas through networking and market research.
Run internal deal teams for deliverables and activities that are part of the partnering center of excellence process. Develop business models terms and performance targets for partnerships.
Lead partner and deal evaluation and execution. Develop review and negotiate contracts.
Partner with Alliance Management and commercial teams for transfer and implementation of executed partnerships.
Serve as a thought partner to the commercial team on complex deals and commercial expansion programs.
Work across internal functions including Marketing Commercial Legal Finance Operations R&D and other stakeholders to drive prioritization decisions resource allocation accountability and joint activities supporting deal process and partnership execution.
Build and share knowledge expertise in focus areas with a broader team. Serve as a regional liaison/subject matter expect on multi-regional and global deals.
Provide leadership to more junior team members (currently one direct report).
Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:
Bachelors degree is required. MBA or advanced degree in a related fieldpreferred; fundamental financial knowledge and modelling skills required.
Typically requires around 15 years of total experience in the field including around 10 years in business development product management sales alliances or similar business roles with strategic and customer/partner-facing attributes and at least 7 years of relevant business/corporate development experience in multi-national companies within the Greater China region (deal sheet is required).
Requires cross-functional cross-region leadership with demonstrated results advanced understanding of P&L. Must possess enterprise-level mindset.
Requires work experience and market knowledge of Biopharma Diagnostics Medical Devices or Life Sciences Tools.
Requires knowledge of China markets including go-to-market approaches and channel strategies. Understanding of the China regulatory framework existing industry network and understanding of Illuminas markets and competitors are a strong plus.
Requires proven ability to evaluate and solve complex problems and the strategic implications of different business approaches with minimal guidance. Ability and desire to effectively manage a project from start to finish both in time and with the desired business/financial outcome.
Very comfortable with ambiguity and fast-paced environment. Capable of learning fast and proactively synthesizing learnings in a format appropriate for diverse audiences including senior leadership.
Collaborative approach is required. Enjoys and thrives in a multi-stakeholder setting builds strong relationships and creates followership.
Strong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills are required both in English and Mandarin. Possesses ability to communicate at all levels of an organization internally and externally.
Strong project management and organizational skills excellent attention to detail.
Location: Shanghai (on site).
