Job Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them

in making educational occupational and life plans that hold promise for their

personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women. To provide

comprehensive identification prevention and intervention protocols and

procedures for students who exhibit mental health issues.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification

Degree in counseling psychology sociology or related field; PhD LPC LMFT

or LMSW is desirable

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of counseling procedures in dealing with student appraisal coping

with emotional and mental health disorders marital and family problems dealing

with stress and anxiety anger management depression suicide and career

development

Ability to provide competent crisis counseling to students and families

Working knowledge of appropriate strategies for transforming behaviors beliefs

and habits indicative of students who suffer from mental health issues

Ability to communicate effectively with youth adults parents and community

members

Ability to analyze develop implement and track intervention plans and strategies

Ability to identify access and utilize social services available in the community

to support students

Knowledge of the Stop and Think program

Excellent interpersonal skills and flexibility in methodology

Experience

Minimum 3 years experience in counseling psychology or social work

Child adolescent and teen counseling experience

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Observe receive and otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources to identify and evaluate students at risk of mental health issues including participation in the Campus Threat Assessment Team.
  1. Provide crisis counseling to district students and follow up with their families and ongoing counseling services as required.
  1. Facilitate various group meetings as needed with identified students.
  1. Work with individuals and groups to improve students mental health.
  1. Coordinate services with community agencies (Bridgehaven CPS Juvenile Probation Police etc.) and other interested parties in order to exchange needed information during the counseling process
  1. Complete and maintain required documentation for School Health and Related Services (SHARS) reimbursement for eligible counseling sessions. Collaborate with special education and Medicaid staff to ensure accurate service logging and compliance with billing procedures.
  2. Conduct counseling evaluations as part of special education Full and Individual Evaluations (FIEs) including participation in the multidisciplinary evaluation team and development of appropriate recommendations.
  3. Write Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFPs) and counseling-related goals and objectives for students receiving counseling services through special education. Ensure alignment with identified student needs and IEP team decisions.
  4. Complete and maintain required documentation for School Health and Related Services (SHARS) reimbursement for eligible counseling sessions. Collaborate with special education and Medicaid staff to ensure accurate service logging and compliance with billing procedures.
  5. Provide counseling services as a related service for students with disabilities as documented in their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in alignment with IDEA and district procedures.
  1. Conduct counseling evaluations as part of special education Full and Individual Evaluations (FIEs) including participation in the multidisciplinary evaluation team and development of appropriate recommendations.
  1. Write Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFPs) and counseling-related goals and objectives for students receiving counseling services through special education. Ensure alignment with identified student needs and IEP team decisions.
  1. Complete and maintain required documentation for School Health and Related Services (SHARS) reimbursement for eligible counseling sessions. Collaborate with special education and Medicaid staff to ensure accurate service logging and compliance with billing procedures.
  1. Consult with principals campus counselors teachers and staff regarding

students who exhibit at-risk behaviors of targeted mental illnesses.

  1. Establish contact with family by telephone mail office or home visits.
  1. Prepare and maintain reports records and documents as required.
  1. Develop constructive and cooperative relationships with others and maintain them over time.
  1. Examine issues including substance abuse bullying anger management

careers depression relationships self-image issues stress and

suicide.

  1. Assist teachers in planning substance abuse and suicide prevention and

intervention activities for the classroom.

  1. Establish short and long-range objectives for students and specify the

strategies and actions to achieve them.

  1. Learn about new developments in dealing with mental illness by reading

professional literature attending courses and seminars and establishing and

maintaining contact with other social service agencies.

  1. Evaluate students physical and mental condition based on a review of

pertinent information to help students define goals and create a plan of action

to improve their mental health situation.

  1. When necessary refer students to psychologists and other mental health

services.

  1. Encourage students to express their feelings and discuss what is happening

in their lives to help them develop insight into themselves and their

relationships.

  1. Guide students in the development of skills and strategies for dealing with

their problems.

  1. Counsel students individually and in group sessions to assist in overcoming

dependencies adjusting to life (death divorce suicide etc.) and making

changes.

  1. Continually evaluate the effectiveness of counseling programs and students

progress in resolving identified problems and moving toward defined

objectives on an individual basis.

  1. Observe and monitor students on a daily basis eat lunch with them and

encourage students to join a club or group.

  1. Knowledgeable in the description of a bully and how to deal with victims

and bullies.

  1. Attendance is an essential job function.
  1. Additional duties as assigned by supervisor

District travel from campus to campus.
