Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Provides support to teachers campus leaders and district administrators aimed at improved outcomes for multilingual learners at the elementary level in participating in bilingual education programs (Dual Language and ESL) and Spanish Immersion (SIP). Refines curriculum that supports the teacher in meeting the unique needs of the multilingual learner; analyzes data to monitor and measure student progress; collaboratively plans models and co-teaches effective sheltered strategies that promote second language acquisition; determines formative measures to provide timely feedback to teachers and administration regarding student progress; provides professional learning aimed at the development of the Dual Language Program (DLP) Spanish Immersion Program (SIP) English as a Second Language (ESL) Comal Advanced Language Program (CALP) and Languages Other than English (LOTE) teacher; manages and evaluates resources that support the implementation and delivery of the TEKS.

Education / Certification:

  1. Valid Texas teaching
  2. Bilingual and/or ESL Certification
  3. Masters degree ispreferred.

Special Knowledge / Skills:

  1. Strong organizational communication and interpersonal
  2. Knowledge of curriculum design and implementation as it applies to the districts DLP SIP ESL CALP and LOTE language learner programs.
  3. Ability to interpret data and evaluate instructional programs and teaching
  4. Knowledge of second language acquisition theories and strategies program models practices techniques and principles.
  5. Knowledge of research validated instructional practices TEKS ELPS TELPAS and
  6. Skill in developing presenting and facilitating professional learning sessions to adult learners.

Experience / Other Requirements:

  1. Five years of experience as a classroom teacher in a DLP SIP ESL CALP LOTE or bilingual classroom.
  2. Experience with technology applications.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Management

  1. Provides coaching modeling and program guidance aimed at professional growth for classroom teachers through workshops and demonstrations pertinent to second language acquisition methods.
  2. Consults frequently with DLP SIP ESL CALP and LOTE campus administrators instructional coaches and classroom teachers on matters relating to quality instruction aimed at the multilingual learner.
  3. Collaborates with Executive Director of Multilingual Education district English Learner Coaches and EL & LPAC Specialists to recommend adoption and use of varied instructional materials including textbooks reference works kits trade books audio-visual aids and software to support students.
  4. Supports and assists building principals and other administrators and /or supervisors in implementing the DLP SIP ESL CALP and LOTE.
  5. Fields questions from all campuses regarding DLP SIP ESL CALP and LOTE and provides response to inquiry in a timely manner.
  6. Develops revises and supports implementation of District-wide curriculum based on local state and national curriculum standards.
  7. Coordinates the review and revision of curriculum documents annually to reflect state standards and the state assessment plan as well as the District-developed curriculum scope and sequence.
  8. Coordinates the evaluation and selection process for textbooks in accordance with District policy and collaborates with the District Textbook Coordinator and with publishers representatives in the acquisition of adopted instructional materials including the annual reordering of consumable resources.
  9. Provides support to novice and/or struggling teachers including classroom coaching and demonstrations appropriate to various levels of instruction.
  10. Assists in the recruitment and interviewing of DLP SIP ESL CALP and LOTE
  11. Monitors and collects data on district unit assessments (UAs) district common assessments (CAs) universal screeners and other program specific screeners/assessments and uses the analysis of the data to determine support from demonstrated student needs.
  12. Updates the EL website with revised unit maps and updated
  13. Assists in the recruitment and interviewing of bilingual/ESL teachers.
  14. Supports campuses with LPAC compliance as per TEA guidance. Works with LPAC facilitators to ensure appropriate program placement including administering and scoring PreLAS and LAS Links assessments as well as IOWA assessments for reclassification.

Professional Development

  1. Prepares and provides effective quality instruction sessions with teachers based on research and best practices supports the District curriculum and incorporates the vision and mission of Comal ISD.
  2. Designs supports and facilitates professional learning that reflects district and national professional development standards in regard to the successful teaching multilingual
  3. Develops and delivers professional learning for teachers in regard to best practices in language learning and high quality sheltered strategies.
  4. Provides training for language proficiency assessments as required by the TEA Rosetta Stone and other computer formats used to assess and support multilingual learners.
  5. Develops and delivers professional learning for teachers in regard to TELPAS ESL Academy and high quality sheltered strategies.
  6. Attends appropriate professional meetings and workshops to maintain proficiency and to acquire new ideas for instructional improvement.
  7. Support teachers in developing proficiency in incorporating content depth the use of varying modalities effective grouping practices concept differentiation and models these techniques during professional development and trainings.

Communication and Community Support

  1. Keeps all stakeholders informed as to the purposes and progress of DLP SIP ESL CALP and LOTE programs.
  2. Serves as a resource to principals campus instructional coaches teachers and support staff in achieving goals and objectives of the Campus Improvement Plan.
  3. Demonstrates awareness of district-community needs and initiates activities to meet those
  4. Responsible for properly maintaining district records adhering to all policies set forth by the district for records maintenance and learning the records retention schedule for department
  5. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.
