GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION

The Lead Summer Instructor/Residential Assistant provides both academic leadership and residential supervision for participants in the Upward Bound Math & Science summer program. This position is responsible for leading instructional support activities assisting with classroom management and overseeing student life in the residence halls. The Lead RA serves as a mentor role model and primary support for both students and junior residential staff ensuring a structured safe and academically enriching summer experience.
This position also functions as a learning advocate and resource broker through the Check and Connect Mentoring Program.

- Strong commitment to working with disadvantaged and underrepresented high school students
- Demonstrates leadership ability in educational or residential settings
- Strong organizational communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage student behavior and enforce program expectations
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings weekends and overnight residential duties
- Ability to reside on campus for the duration of the summer program
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Bachelors degree in education STEM field counseling or related area (preferred)
- State of Mississippi teaching certification (preferred)
- Previous experience working in Upward Bound TRIO programs or similar student support programs strongly preferred
- Experience in residential life youth development tutoring or mentoring required or highly desirable
- Prior supervisory or lead worker experience preferred
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Instructional Leadership Support
- Assist with coordination and support of summer STEM instruction
- Support academic instructors during classroom sessions as needed
- Provide intervention tutoring and academic support to students
- Help ensure instructional activities align with UBMS goals and include a research component
- Monitor student academic progress and support instructional planning
- Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues legislation and best practices.
Residential Leadership Responsibilities
- Provide direct supervision of students in residence halls
- Lead daily residential meetings to establish goals and review daily outcomes
- Serve as the primary point of contact for residential concerns and student support issues
- Enforce program rules curfews and residential expectations
- Respond to student behavioral issues and emergencies appropriately
- Assist with planning and leading evening/weekend enrichment activities
- Conduct room checks attendance checks and documentation of incidents
Mentoring & Student Support
- Serve as a learning advocate/resource broker through the Check and Connect Mentoring Program
- Provide mentorship and guidance to support student academic social and emotional development
- Connect students with campus and program resources as needed
- Promote student engagement in college readiness and enrichment activities
Program Coordination & Support
- Support Residential Assistants and assist with their supervision and guidance
- Participate in staff meetings training sessions and program planning activities
- Assist with field trips college tours and special events
- Ensure compliance with all TRIO/UBMS federal program regulations and institutional policies
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides direct supervision of Upward Bound Math & Science student participants in residential and program settings
- Offers guidance and oversight to Residential Assistants as assigned
- Responsible for ensuring student safety accountability and adherence to program rules
- Supports coordination of student activities and residential operations
