At the NYC Department of Buildings we are responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity efficiency and professionalism. The Limited Alteration Application (LAA) Unit reviews DOB NOW applications for plumbing work fire suppression piping replacement and repairs and oil burner installations that do not include construction work. Apart from some minor new installations LAA work is generally restricted to repair and/or replacement of existing equipment and does not require a Professional Engineer (PE) or a Registered Architect (RA).
Position Responsibilities
Under the direction and supervision of the Director Limited Alteration Application (LAA) the intern will:
- Monitor and track Emergency Work Notification (EWN) filings and associated permits for code compliance.
- Research and update the LAA Certified Listing Agency Appliances spreadsheet
- Assist with updating and formatting the LAAs Uniform Audit Checklist
- Help structure and update LAAs Quick Code Reference Guide (code cheat sheet)
- Assist with Ordinary Plumbing Work (OPWs) Audits and Property Profile reviews
- Communicates with stakeholders regarding Ordinary Plumbing Work processes and Emergency Work Notifications

Qualifications :
As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program June - August each year.
