Location: NCDMV Headquarters Rocky Mount NC
Internship Duration: 10-week internship (May 26-July 31 2026)

About the Role:

Join the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) Vehicle Services Directors Office as an intern and gain hands-on experience supporting statewide vehicle services operations and performance improvement initiatives. This on-site internship based at NCDMV Headquarters in Rocky Mount NC provides exposure to data analysis policy development contract administration and performance management within a high-impact customer-focused environment.

The intern will support a major division-wide project focused on developing new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for License Plate Agencies (LPAs). This work will inform revisions to LPA contracts and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure agencies meet established customer service standards. The role includes collaboration with the Vehicle Services Directors Office legal advisors the Commissioners Office and multiple internal DMV units offering a comprehensive view of decision-making at the executive and operational levels.

Responsibilities:

Assist with the development and analysis of KPIs for License Plate Agencies (LPAs).
Support the revision of LPA contracts and Standard Operating Procedures including researching legal and operational implications.
Conduct mathematical analysis data analysis and time-and-wait studies related to customer service performance.
Assist with expansion analysis and evaluation of LPA service capacity and efficiency.
Compile research findings and contribute to written reports recommendations and draft policy documents.
Support project management activities including tracking milestones and coordinating with stakeholders.
Participate in meetings with directors office staff subject matter experts legal advisors and other DMV units.
Potentially travel within North Carolina to observe and study LPA operations and service times.

Preferred Qualifications:

Enrollment in a program related to data analytics public administration business mathematics economics engineering or a related field.
Strong mathematical analytical and data interpretation skills.
Excellent written communication skills with the ability to draft clear and professional documents.
Interest in performance management policy development contracts or public-sector operations.
Experience or coursework in research methods data analysis or project management is preferred.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders in a professional on-site environment.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a currently enrolled full-time student in a bachelors masters or professional level program at an accredited or recently graduated from a North Carolina Historically Black College/University (HBCU) or Minority Serving Institution (MSI) by May 2026.
  • 24 credit hours completed.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on 4.0 scale)
  • Has legal right to work in the U.S. and do not need sponsorship
