Job Summary

The Medical Director will provide strategic clinical and operational leadership across all medical and clinical services of the hospital. The role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe high-quality patient-centered care while driving clinical governance regulatory compliance operational efficiency and continuous improvement.

Working closely with the GMD and Board of Directors the Medical Director will lead the hospitals clinical vision oversee medical staff and departments ensure adherence to best clinical practices and strengthen the hospitals reputation as a center of excellence in healthcare delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Patient Care

  • Promote patient satisfaction by ensuring high-quality patient-centered care that delivers value for money.

  • Oversee the development implementation and evaluation of patient safety measures across surgical medical diagnostic and administrative services.

  • Provide clinical oversight for ongoing projects and evaluate new treatments technologies and interventions.

  • Ensure confidentiality of medical records and strict adherence to medical ethics and professional standards.

Quality Assurance & Clinical Governance

  • Lead hospital-wide quality improvement and assurance initiatives including tracking mortality morbidity infection control and readmission rates.

  • Supervise clinical audit processes and clinical governance activities.

  • Provide direct oversight to the Clinical Director and indirect oversight to all Heads of Clinical Departments.

  • Report quality safety and performance outcomes to the Board of Directors.

Strategic & Operational Management

  • Provide strategic leadership and participate actively in hospital vision setting planning and execution.

  • Coordinate inter-unit and multidisciplinary collaborations to ensure continuity and efficiency of service delivery.

  • Develop implement and regularly update hospital policies clinical guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Ensure effective use and oversight of Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and hospital information systems.

Human Resource & Capacity Development

  • Lead clinical workforce planning recruitment onboarding performance management and appraisal processes.

  • Ensure optimal staffing levels competency and professional conduct across all clinical units.

  • Support continuous medical education training and professional development of staff to enhance service delivery.

Financial & Resource Management

  • Develop and manage the hospitals annual clinical and operational budget in collaboration with management.

  • Ensure efficient use of financial and material resources while driving cost containment and operational efficiency.

  • Apply sound financial judgment in clinical and administrative decision-making.

Regulatory Compliance & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Ensure full compliance with healthcare regulations accreditation standards NHIS requirements and relevant health policies.

  • Keep Management and the Board informed of regulatory changes and compliance obligations.

  • Foster strong internal and external relationships through effective communication and collaboration.

  • Represent the hospital at external meetings conferences professional forums and stakeholder engagements locally and internationally.

Corporate Representation & Other Duties

  • Collaborate with marketing and business development teams to promote hospital services and strengthen brand positioning.

  • Maintain productive relationships with the Board community leaders regulators partners and professional bodies.

  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Board or Management balancing clinical excellence with administrative leadership.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Qualifications

  • Fellowship qualification from a recognized medical college (e.g. NPMCN WACP WACS or equivalent).

  • Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years post-fellowship clinical experience.

  • At least 3 years in a senior medical leadership or hospital administrative role.

  • Proven experience in clinical governance quality improvement and patient safety.

  • Demonstrated experience in budget planning financial management and resource optimization.

  • Prior experience within the private healthcare sector is required.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong clinical expertise and sound medical decision-making ability.

  • Excellent leadership interpersonal and people-management skills.

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to design implement and enforce hospital policies and strategies.

  • High level of financial acumen and strategic thinking.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and hospital information systems.

  • Project management and change management experience.

  • Strong understanding of NHIS operations and healthcare regulatory compliance.
