Job Summary

Summary

Corrections professionals who foster a humane and secure environment and ensure public safety by preparing individuals for successful reentry into our communities.


Duties

Provides direct patient care services under the direction of a registered nurse within the dialysis unit.

Prepares patient care areas with equipment and supplies needed for the initiating and completing of the hemodialysis treatment.

Responsible for a full range of skilled patient care procedures that include cannulation initiation termination and providing of intra-dialytic monitoring of the dialysis treatment.

Along with all other correctional institution employees incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position you must meet the following qualification requirements.

Basic Requirements:

Specialized Experience:

For positions at GS-4 and above: Experience in operating supervising the operation of or instructing in the operation of equipment related to the particular specialization for which application is made. Experience gained in the operation of equipment in a specialization directly related to the specialization may be credited through the GS-5 level.

Experience gained in the operation of equipment for animal diagnosis or treatment may be credited as specialized experience for that particular specialization through the GS-5 level.

OR

Education:

GL-05: Successful completion of (a) an approved program in practical nursing or in operating room or surgical technician work of at least 9 months in length or (b) l year of study with at least 6 semester hours in any combination of scientific subjects such as biology anatomy physiology chemistry medical technology or physics.

GL-06: Nine semester hours or 13.5 quarter hours of graduate education in the related field of the position.

NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.

Experience

Some examples of the qualifying experience are:

GL-05:

  • Experience that demonstrates knowledge of basis nursing care activities as required to meet the needs of End Stage Renal Disease patients.
  • Experience assisting with a variety of dialysis procedures.
  • Experience in obtaining appropriate laboratory specimens as required for a patient undergoing hemodialysis.
  • Experience ordering and stocking supplies for a Dialysis Unit.

GL-06:

  • Experience that demonstrates knowledge of specialized care for End Stage Renal Disease patients.
  • Experience in the operation and function of dialysis equipment and the maintenance required to ensure safe and efficient dialysis for patients.
  • Experience cannulating initiating terminating and providing Intradalytic monitoring of the dialysis treatment.
  • Experience in coordinating the delivery of special supplies and equipment through vendors and other resources such as community hospitals.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience:

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable.

If applicable credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

Additional information

In accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3307 a maximum entry age of 36 has been established for original appointment to a position in a Bureau of Prisons institution. If you are above the maximum entry age and have prior federal law enforcement coverage you MUST submit an SF-50 to verify prior coverage.

Special Conditions of Employment Section:

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a pre-employment and panel interview urinalysis physical and background investigation.

All applicants are subject to and must satisfactorily pass all screening requirements in relation to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit check.

All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.

The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score of 68 must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.

Successful completion of the Introduction to Correctional Techniques three-week training course at Glynco Georgia is required.

Additional selections may be made if vacancies occur within the life of the certificate.
