The MLT has full supervisory responsibility in a designated section of the laboratory where the following conditions have been met. The MLT supervises a staff of non-supervisory personnel including Medical Laboratory Technicians Medical Technicians and Health Technicians.
Duties are but not limited to:
A Supervisory Medical Laboratory Technician at the GS-08 level performs higher-level duties that are of significant scope complexity (difficulty) and range in variety. The MLT must spend 25% or more of their time providing administrative and technical supervision in addition to perform major duties above those at the full performance level.
- Responsible for all aspects of operation in their area of specialty including preparation and maintenance of records and reports training and compliance.
- Assess work recommends appointments awards advancement and disciplinary actions of subordinate staff.
- Plans and assigns work based on priorities adjusting staffing levels and work procedures to accommodate resource allocations made at the executive levels.
- Ensures compliance with rules and regulation of assorted regulatory agencies such as CAP TJC OSHA and the National Enforcement Office. - Verifies orientation training and competency assessment of assigned staff.
- Establishes and monitors the quality of pre-analytical analytical and post-analytical processes initiation of corrective actions as need as part of the overall laboratory quality assurance/management program.
- Plans and implement performance and quality improvement projects that result in efficient laboratory operation.
- Serves as an expert providing authoritative advice and consultation for more markedly difficult complex unique and/or emerging tests requiring special knowledge.
- Develops and updates technical policies and procedure manuals maintain proper document control.
- Responsible for technical and administrative management of assigned areas including budget execution to include adequate par levels for supplies.
- Interacts with administrative and clinical onsite personnel and exercises significant independent decision-making authority.
- Maintains effective interdisciplinary and interprofessional relations with other services to accomplish medical center goals.
- Develops performance standards position descriptions and functional statements.

Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave 13 days of sick leave 11 paid Federal holidays per year)
