Position Title: School Health Attendant
Pay Grade: 10 Period of Employment: 9.5 months
Descriptions Approved/ Revised: 11/2024 FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Supervised by and/or Reports to: School Nurse and Director Student Health
General Responsibilities: Assist the school nurse in the implementation of the schools student health services program.
Essential Duties:

- Follows the school nurses instructions and procedures to assist in the daily operation of the clinic.
- Responds promptly to emergencies and administer emergency medications such as epinephrine albuterol and/or naloxone following health protocols.
- Responds to health emergencies by initiating Emergency Medical System (EMS) and providing emergency care according to protocol.
- Administers first aid according to established protocols to students who are ill or injured within various locations on school grounds.
- Participates in communicable disease surveillance in schools.
- Monitors daily student absences and illness in the school for community trends
- Compiles and submits health room statistics and reports using computer data entry and information systems.
- Maintains clear and accurate documentation of health room visits on a daily basis
- Administers medications according to Manassas City Public Schools guidelines;
- Performs specialized health care procedures as trained and assigned i.e. suctioning tube feeding catheterization etc.
- Coordinates the screening procedures of the school health program i.e. vision and hearing screenings; performs follow up screenings follows up with parent/guardian and assists the nurse in making referrals for students with hearing/vision deficits.
- Documents care provided according to Manassas City Public School guidelines;
- Organizes and maintains cleanliness of health room and its supplies.
- Attends required training sessions and contributes to community activities related to public health emergency responses.
- Maintains and updates electronic school health records and statistics;
- Supervises and directs student movement in the health office and/or off-site during hearing/vision screenings school located vaccine clinics emergency drills
- Attends student conferences and support staff meetings as required
- Maintains confidentiality.
Requisite Education and Experience:
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Minimum one (1) to three (3) years of experience working with children in education health care or child-care setting; or any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities
- Must possess an active CPR/AED/First Aid Certification or obtain certification within 14 days of employment.
- Must possess a current license and in good standing as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Certified Medical Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Ability to operate standard office word and data processing equipment.
- Able to work with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Knowledge of FERPA and HIPPA.
- Knowledge of PowerSchool and InfoSnap.
- Able to work well with students parents and staff.
- Able to work well in a school environment.
- Able to initiate tasks and work independently.
- Able to multitask and work well under pressure.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Able to exercise appropriate judgement in a variety of situations including crisis.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred
- Ability to use sound judgment and to work independently within established policies procedures and guidelines;
- Establishes a good rapport with staff and community members through informal daily interactions.
- Builds positive and professional relationships with students and leverages those relationships to establish and maintain productive and safe learning environments and common areas of the building
- Demonstrates dignity and respect when interacting with students at all times.
Physical Requirements:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see read talk hear handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as but not limited to: a personal computer calculator copier and fax machine. Some climbing stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting grasping or repetitive motions required.
