Job Description

QUINCY SCHOOL DISTRICT

Director of Transportation

Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent

Salary Range: $89000-$96000

Classification: Exempt Administrative

Conditions of Work: 260 Days

Location: Transportation Department

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Transportation is responsible for the safe efficient and cost-effective transportation of students in accordance with federal state and local laws and regulations. This includes the daily management of the districts transportation program supervision of department personnel vehicle and equipment oversight route planning budget management and compliance with Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) transportation standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND OPERATIONS:

Planning and Operations

  • Design and optimize bus routes for safety and efficiency.
  • Oversee daily transportation operations including dispatch routing and driver coordination.
  • Collaborate with school leadership to plan annual transportation needs.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports on personnel equipment and inventory.
  • Recommend staffing equipment and budget allocations to support service quality.
  • Prepare and submit documentation to support state transportation funding and allocation processes.
  • Leverage transportation software systems for data management and planning.
  • Serve as a backup driver when necessary.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISION:

  • Supervise and evaluate transportation staff including driversand mechanics.
  • Promote a professional respectful and supportivedepartmental culture.
  • Provide coaching feedback and performance evaluations.
  • Ensure compliance with district state and federaltransportation policies.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts to enhance servicedelivery.
  • Serve on the school district management team.

COMMUNICATION:

  • Serve as liaison with parents school staff law enforcement and community partners.
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of student rights including discipline and privacy guidelines.
  • Utilize effective and civil oral and written communication skills.
  • Be a positive team player who works with others in a professional collaborative manner.

SAFTEY AND COMPLIANCE:

  • Ensure students safety on buses and at bus stops.
  • Monitor compliance with transportation laws and safety standards.
  • Oversee transportation for students with special needs.
  • Conduct safety training and emergency preparedness drills.
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage vehicle maintenance and inspection programs.

OTHER RELATED DUTIES:

  • Serve as a backup driver when necessary.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs. operating buses and maintaining visual/auditory acuity for safe transportation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • CDL with applicable endorsements
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful experience in transportation operations preferably in a school district.
  • Knowledge of OSPI transportation rules and procedures including WAC 392-141 and RCW 28A.
  • Experience operating school buses and interpreting route maps.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and communicate with tact discretion and professionalism.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Additional college coursework or a degree in business public administration logistics or related field.
  • Experience with student transportation routing software.
  • Biliterate: English/ Spanish.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Office and field environment with frequent travel between sites.
  • Must be available during early morning hours inclement weather events and emergencies.
  • May involve occasional evening and weekend work.

The vacation credit to which an employee shall be entitled shall be computed as follows:

Upon completion of one (1) year of service each twelve (12) month employee shall be granted ten (10) days paid vacation. Upon completion of five (5) years of service each twelve (12) month employee shall be granted fifteen (15) days paid vacation. Upon completion of fifteen (15) years of service each twelve (12) month employee shall receive one (1) additional day of vacation for each year of service up to a maximum of twenty (20) days total.

*Benefits may be prorated based upon date of hire/hours per day.
