Job Description

The Amherst Regional Public School District is seeking a full-time qualified mild/moderate Special Education Teacher starting in the 2025-2026 school year. ARPS is seeking candidates who are dual certified in special education and English; or who are special education certified and willing to obtain certification in English.

Under the direction of the building administrators Special Education Teachers develops and provides specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives using data and functions as IEP Case Manager to assigned students.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing direct academic instruction to individual and small groups of students
  • Modifying and adapting curriculum planning and implementing curriculum/lessons
  • Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each students IEP
  • Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques
  • Employs various teaching techniques methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals
  • Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans for students
  • Adheres to local state and federal procedural requirements including timelines
  • Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each students IEP
  • May provides instructional direction to paraprofessional support staff: assigns activities provides guidance and instructional oversight
  • Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and service providers regarding the needs of students.
  • May provides consultation to general teachers regarding classroom adaptations instructional modifications adaptive equipment behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Creating a safe classroom space that fosters learning student engagement and accountability
  • Utilizing effective classroom management skills and positive behavior management techniques
  • Providing case management and regular communication with families

Highly qualified candidates will possess the following:

  • Strong positive effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to build effective collaborative relationships with others
  • Strong case management and home-school communication skills
  • Highly effective executive function skills including being well organized strong time management skills and able to work independently to meet timelines. Ability to multitask show flexibility and work within a fast paced environment
  • Experience with mild/moderate and neurodiverse learning profiles
  • Experience with completing all aspects of the IEP process including implementation monitoring and development
  • Experience with a diverse population of students within a multicultural school community
  • Knowledgeable about instructional strategies techniques and interventions including those that pertain to reading writing mathematics and executive functioning
  • Skilled in planning developing lesson plans and implementing direction instruction to individual or small groups of students in a general education or special education setting
  • Skilled in presenting complex materials and concepts in an understandable and grade appropriate manner

Qualified candidates who are bilingual (Spanish / English) are desirable but not required.


All candidates must hold Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Licensure in Moderate Disabilities level K-8 or 5-12 or Severe Disabilities All levels.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to use hands to assist students perform tasks speak to deliver instruction and behavioral directives and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand walk sit reach with hands and arms; and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee may also be required to use physical interventions to maintain the safety of students.
