Job Description

The Advocacy & Grant Specialist will work in an evolving and dynamic department supporting the Foodbanks legislative advocacy efforts and developing relationships and solicitation related to government grants. The Specialist will aid the ACRFBs efforts in developing and formalizing advocacy and government relations best practices assisting the Manager Foundation & Government Relations in cultivating relationships with legislative stakeholders cooperating within the states food bank network drafting outreach materials to be shared with ACRFB staff partners community stakeholders and elected representatives and representing the Foodbank at advocacy engagements and legislative visits. The Specialist will hold an important portfolio that includes local state and federal government donors as constituents and will be responsible for prospecting cultivation and stewardship engagement related to new government grant opportunities. The Specialist will work collaboratively within the Institutional Giving and Grants team and will be expected to assist with the teams overall goals which may include corporate foundation and Feeding America grants. A high degree of time management meticulous organization and project management skills are essential for success in this position. Hours; M-F 8am-4pm. Salary range $50-55k based on experience.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Proposal development; submission tracking and reporting for strategic and government grants.
  • Preparation of follow-up reports to grantors to communicate the expenditure of grants.
  • Maintain annual tracking of advocacy engagement activities.
  • Strategize and develop a comprehensive approach to overall government giving. Identify engagement points while maximizing opportunities in all eight counties.
  • Cultivate and coordinate government relationships at the federal state county and municipal levels. Engagements may include but are not limited to: Foodbank and network partner tours participation in lobby day events meetings with Foodbank executives and community leaders and presentations and participation at community meetings.
  • Conduct regular research on public policy issues monitoring the trajectory of relevant legislation from bill introduction to full chamber voting and sharing updates with ACRFB staff and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with the marketing team to manage the ACRFBs advocacy outreach and network; draft newsletters action alerts and other advocate communications and distribute to network. Draft rapid response materials to mobilize staff and advocates quickly around unexpected legislation.
  • Represent the ACRFB at convenings community events legislative lobby days and at legislative visits in-district to share the organizations needs and priorities.
  • Develop recruitment orientation and training tools for staff and advocates to use in outreach efforts
  • Coordinate with peer community groups including those within the Feeding America network Ohio Association of Foodbanks and Ohios other food banks.
  • Develop implement and coordinate engagement activities related to Hunger Action Month and other relevant campaigns; conduct event outreach in community and with government organizations.
  • Provide administrative support for Manager Foundation & Government relations related to government relations communications and internal and external meetings.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support the Fund Development team.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree or equal work experience preferably in Communications Marketing English Political Science or Business.
  • Three to five years of writing communications or similar experience. Government relations and/or lobbying experience preferred.
  • Expertise in verbal and written communications with public policy decision makers advocacy peers and legislative aides is required.
  • Ability to represent the organization at events and in communications as an objective nonpartisan representative focused solely on issues impacting food insecurity.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks willingness to adjust to changing priorities excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and in a team environment are required.
  • Natural collaborator with the ability to coordinate work with individuals from various backgrounds on projects to gather information relevant to work.
  • Available during off-hours for communication related to advocacy updates of all kinds which may include occasional travel during weekends and evenings.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products; experience with Donor Database Management software a plus.
  • Must be able to follow all American Institute of Baking Feeding America Food and Drug Administration United States Department of Agriculture Occupational Safety Hazard Administration and Foodbank (standard operating procedures and employee handbook) safety regulations.
