The Department of Chemistry invites applicants for the position of undergraduate laboratory stockroom manager. The successful applicant will be responsible for preparing and delivering chemicals solutions glassware and lab supplies for general organic and analytical chemistry lab courses as well as providing support as needed for the advanced chemistry labs. The stockroom manager supervises a small number of student assistants and helps to recruit train and supervise teaching assistants for the various lab courses.


Duties and Responsibilities (* denotes essential functions):

  1. *Provide training advice and guidance to teaching assistants (TAs) on classroom management including grading and enforcement of safety protocols. Identify recurring problems and develop workable solutions to improve the educational experience in laboratory classrooms.
  2. *Prepare solutions supplies and other materials for each days instructional laboratories.
  3. *Assure that equipment needed for lab courses is in good working order. Work with other staff to maintain and repair equipment (including computers). Instruct TAs and student helpers in the preparation and operation of laboratory equipment.
  4. *Order procure and inventory chemicals other consumables and equipment needed for instructional laboratories.
  5. *Develop indepth training for teaching assistants focusing on chemical technical and practical knowledge and skills. Provide handson laboratory training demonstrations for safety and efficiency.
  6. *Train supervise and coordinate activities of TAs in CHEM 161L 162L 272L 273L. Lead regular TA meetings in collaboration with faculty. Train new TAs to lead classes through the experiments by demonstration and practicum.
  7. *Provide information and guidance regarding safety in instructional and research labs. Relevant topics include the safe use and storage of the full range of chemicals as well as the storage and disposal of hazardous waste. Coordinate online and group training sessions for TAs and maintain safety training records.
  8. *Supervise and coordinate lab courses numbered 274L and up as needed.
  9. *Coordinate the recruitment hiring assignment to courses and scheduling to specific sections for graduate teaching assistants and undergraduate teaching interns.
  10. *Schedule TAs and instructional tutors to cover tutoring duties in the learning emporium.
  11. *Support and guide TAs on resolving student complaints or student conduct issues in accordance with current policies and procedures.
  12. *Provide updates and other modifications to the laboratory course curricula. Test new or modified experiments. Make recommendations and provide feedback to faculty for continuous improvement in the curriculum.
  13. *Train and supervise undergraduate student workers as stockroom assistants.
  14. *Maintain a clean and safe working environment in the undergraduate stockroom and all of the undergraduate teaching labs.
  15. Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:


Education and Professional Work Experience:
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Chemistry Biochemistry or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for chemical safety and preparation of chemicals solutions and supplies for chemistry instructional laboratories; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of chemical safety and preparation of chemicals solutions and supplies for chemistry instructional laboratories as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with chemical safety and preparation or chemicals solutions and supplies for chemistry instructional laboratories.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team leaders and members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software spreadsheet and database software.
  • If applicable for supervisory work demonstrated ability to lead subordinates manage work priorities and projects and manage employee relations.


Desirable Qualifications:

  • Masters degree (or higher) in chemistry biochemistry or a closely related area.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles practices & techniques in lab management & preparation of laboratories for experiments as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard & evolving concepts principles & methodologies.
  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of applicable federal state and university laws rules regulations and practices associated with laboratory management.
