Responsibilities
As an Underwriting Director youll maintain Berkley Fire & Marines underwriting standards while supporting the business strategy initiatives and financial return goals through underwriting excellence. Youll utilize your extensive and diversified technical property and inland marine underwriting expertise to evaluate risks in a referral capacity. The role will also support underwriting projects including inland marine product guidance tools and continual underwriting education. You will also be responsible for training & development of the technical acumen of our underwriting teams along with the Regional Vice President (RVP). Well trust you to closely collaborate with the underwriting teams to maintain compliance and underwriting standards.
Referrals include consultation and examination of individual risks for: risk attributes risk selection; underwriting; pricing use and adequacy of rating models; wordings including coverage provided and other terms and conditions; rate rule and form compliance; limits management; use of loss control and/or risk management use of facultative reinsurance; and quoting binding and issuance process.
Youll also provide thought leadership on a continual basis to always be improving underwriting acumen and standards as needed and will proactively adjust to market and changing dynamics.

Well count on you to:
- Collaborate with RVPs as needed to support with risk quality & decisionmaking feedback and opportunities for individual improvement and coaching.
- Deliver timely feedback to underwriting and leadership outlining areas for improvement.
- Act as a resource for underwriting and support local teams with training for best practices and collaborative conversation related to underwriting improvement.
- Continuously look for ways to improve underwriting standards. Share valueadded recommendations with Senior Management.
- Maintain a strong pulse on the underwriting environment market conditions competition and other factors facing the industry.
- Collaborate to develop products and tools.
- Work with product to manage and maintain usage of manuscripts in compliance with regulatory needs and BFM directives.
- Work with compliance to manage and maintain usage of filings products etc.
- Work with Berkley Fire & Marine and Berkley Shared Services underwriting resources in support of project initiatives.
- Act as a resource for the underwriting office for future platform integration such as Guidewire.
- Other underwriting related projects as assigned.
- Provide feedback on coaching opportunities and develops related training as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in relevant discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 10 years of Insurance industry experience
- Deep expertise in Inland marine lines of coverage
- Seasoned commercial property & inland marine underwriting expertise: prior experience as an underwriter
- Must be action oriented and have strong drive to achieve results
- Knowledgeable about pricing evaluation forms and coverage and regulatory compliance
- Understanding and knowledge of treaty and facultative reinsurance structures
- Advancedlevel knowledge of insurance products/coverage market segments and marketplace
- Must have strong interpersonal skills business acumen and sound business judgment and be capable of effectively communicating with a diverse range of individuals and teams
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft office suite including Excel PowerPoint and Word
