Faculty Employment Opportunity

POSITION:

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE: The Agriculture program invites applications for a tenuretrack appointment serving the Agriculture BS programs Sustainable Agriculture concentration. This is primarily a teaching position. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses using our oncampus sustainable garden and demonstration orchard as a field laboratory. The candidate will be expected to integrate classroom instruction with field trips and handson farm training/workshops to help deepen students theoretical and practical understanding of agricultural and ecological concepts as they pertain to sustainable agriculture. Teaching assignments will typically be drawn primarily from the following courses: 1 Agroecology 2 Sustainable Vegetable Production 3 Tree and Fruit Crop Production and Management 4 Principles of Horticulture and Practices and 5 Agriculture Society and the Natural World depending on candidates specific areas of expertise. Additional duties may include course development and establishing an active studentfocused experiential learning program focused on fruits nuts and vegetables. Other responsibilities will include student mentoring and advising a highly diverse student population. Effective teaching scholarly productivity and service to the University are required for retention promotion and tenure. This is an academic year appointment. The successful candidate may be supported to explore competitive grant opportunities to fund summer activities interdisciplinary projects on the university campus 2acre Sustainable Garden and fruit orchard and projects focused on Agricultural Innovation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD in Plant Science Sustainable Agriculture Agroecology or closely related field is required with some prior collegelevel teaching experience and/or relevant industry experience. Applications from ABD candidates will be considered but all requirements for the PhD must be completed prior to the inception of the appointment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

PhD in Plant Science Sustainable Agriculture Agroecology or a closely related field. Demonstrated proficiency in both inperson and online collegelevel instruction. Evidence of field experience in sustainable agriculture and agroecology with specific application to California agriculture and controlled environment agriculture platforms.

Preference for candidates who provide evidence of effective teaching at the college level. Postdoctoral work or teaching experience in a community college Agriculture program will strengthen an applicants candidacy as will experience in working across disciplines. Experience with diverse horticultural production that spans plant propagation soil regeneration novelty crop cultivation greenhouse management irrigation season extension IPM postharvest management and food safety is highly desired.

Preference for candidates who provide evidence of effective teaching at the college level. Postdoctoral research or extension experience or teaching experience at the Junior college will strengthen an applicants candidacy as will a strong background or research interest in crop production and management practices in California. Previous experience in working across disciplines to develop student experiential learning research programs is highly desired.

The Bachelor of Science in Agriculture is a multidisciplinary program blending contributions from several of academic departments in support of lower and upper division core courses serving four concentrations: Agricultural Biology Agricultural Economics Sustainable Agriculture and General Agriculture. The program also depends on and fosters sustainable relationships with area community colleges through the implementation of a 22 curricular design. Students majoring in the program are encouraged to explore diverse approaches to agricultural production distribution and management within evolving economic and environmental settings. Experiential learning and applied research opportunities are supported within each concentration. The B.S. in Agriculture is offered through the College of the Arts Humanities & Social Sciences.
