Job Description

Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multistep progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

**A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations**

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason thisclassification exists is to supervise work crews and maintenance/construction projectswhich include public rightsofway parks ball fields playgrounds neighborhoodsand cityowned buildings. The major work duties include planning for anassignment directing activities on a work site documenting project activitiesand supervising a work crew. The distinguishing characteristics of thisclassification include responsibility for supervising work crews engaged inmanual nonskilled to semiskilled labor performing a variety of maintenance constructionand custodial duties. Incumbents work under general direction. They aregenerally in charge of the crew plan and carry out assignments with considerableindependence and have some latitude in developing procedures and methods. Assignments are received at the beginning ofthe shift and the foreman typically prioritizes the assignments. Supervisorsare contacted for guidance in cases of unexpected occurrences or unanticipated situations.Errors made during the performance of tasks can result in safety hazards to thegeneral public and the work crew for example chemical applications on aplayground with numerous children at play poor construction of sidewalks androadways lack of attention to safety hazards and injuries to work crew. LaborForemen II are distinguished from Labor Foremen I by the level of skill possessedby their subordinates. For example Foremen II typically supervise employees inclassifications such as Equipment Operator Heavy Equipment Operator and LaborForeman I. Labor Foremen I typically supervise Service Maintenance Workers.

Minimum Qualifications

Two 2 years of experience as a lead worker on a construction maintenance orcustodial crew. Specific expertise maybe required based on the specific vacancy for example experience in the areasof playground maintenance ball field maintenance carpentry landscaping lawncare chemical spraying utility service asphalt and concrete.

NOTE: Qualifying educationtraining and experience that provide the requisite knowledge skills andabilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Possession of an Alabama Commercial Drivers License as needed to drive and operate city vehicles and equipment.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to lift and move objects up to 5070 pounds as needed to move materials at work sites. Physical ability to sit stand walk stoop and bend repeatedly for extended periods of time as needed to complete various work tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The majority of the jobs require working outside which includes traveling over rough uneven or rocky surfaces and working in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements. All jobs require the movement of objects weighing from 5070 pounds with assistance bending or stooping repeatedly over time; and working with cleaning fluids chemicals pesticides insecticidespaints cleaning agents or similar solutions. May work some weekends during peak seasons or prior to and after special city events. May work longer than normal regular hours to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner.
