HIRING RANGE: $23.30 - $30.59 per hour
TOTAL Range: $23.30 - $36.70 per hour
NATURE OF WORK

Under general supervision the Parks and Open Space Technician I/II helps bring the departments motto to life by creating spaces and places for residents and their families to thrive. This position plays a hands-on role in maintaining safe welcoming and well-cared-for public spaces throughout the Town including parks open space trails medians rights-of-way municipal grounds lakes ponds and other community amenities.
The role supports the daily care improvement and operation of Town outdoor spaces through landscape maintenance turf care irrigation support trail and amenity maintenance equipment operation snow removal public interaction and support for Town programs and events. As assigned this position may also support golf course maintenance.
This position will be staffed as a Technician I or Technician II based on experience certifications demonstrated skill level and operational need.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Performs maintenance and repair duties for Town parks open space trails municipal grounds rights-of-way medians lakes ponds golf-related grounds or facilities and other assigned public amenities.
  • Maintains turf landscaped areas trees shrubs flowers beds hardscapes and natural areas through mowing watering trimming pruning planting weeding fertilizing edging renovation removal and general upkeep.
  • Maintains open space areas trail corridors waterways lakes undeveloped properties and related amenities including weed control invasive tree and shrub control trail maintenance litter control wildlife and fish issue monitoring and general site maintenance.
  • Operates inspects and performs routine maintenance on vehicles tools and equipment used in parks open space landscape irrigation snow removal and related maintenance operations.
  • Maintains and repairs irrigation systems including sprinkler heads valves drip systems field adjustments and basic irrigation plumbing repairs.
  • Repairs and maintains public amenities and facilities including playground equipment picnic tables benches restrooms grills signs trash receptacles and related infrastructure.
  • Applies herbicides pesticides fertilizers and related materials in accordance with applicable laws safety standards certifications and Town procedures; maintains required usage records.
  • Supports snow and ice control operations including clearing snow leaves and debris from sidewalks trails rights-of-way facilities sports fields courts and other assigned areas.
  • Sets up appropriate traffic control devices when working in rights-of-way medians or other public work areas.
  • Assists with setup teardown and logistical support for Town programs events and public activities.
  • Supports Town golf course and golf shop operations as assigned which may include golf course grounds maintenance facility upkeep event setup course amenity maintenance and occasional operational support.
  • Responds professionally to on-site questions from residents staff contractors and the public; refers complex or sensitive matters to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Follows safety practices uses proper personal protective equipment identifies hazards and reports maintenance safety or operational concerns.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of parks open space landscape turf tree shrub trail irrigation and general grounds maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices traffic control procedures equipment operation chemical handling and applicable maintenance standards.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in parks and open space maintenance including trucks trailers tractors mowers skid-steers trimmers edgers blowers trenchers sod cutters hand tools and related equipment.
  • Ability to operate assigned vehicles tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions complete assigned work and communicate effectively with supervisors coworkers contractors and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a field-based environment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment initiative and problem-solving appropriate to classification level.
  • Ability to provide courteous and professional customer service in public-facing parks open space golf course golf shop and Town facility environments.
  • Ability to learn and follow basic golf shop procedures including point-of-sale reservation cash handling inventory and customer service practices as assigned.
EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Education experience training and certification requirements are dependent on whether the position is filled at the Technician I or Technician II level. Technician I is generally entry-level while Technician II requires directly related experience demonstrated technical competency and greater independence in the field. Seasonal positions typically require little to no previous directly related experience although related experience in parks open space landscaping golf grounds maintenance equipment operation or customer service is preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid drivers license.
  • Must be 18 years old
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND TRAINING
Required certifications and training must be possessed at the time of hire or obtained within one year of hire.
Technician I and Technician II
  • First Aid CPR and AED certification.
  • Basic pesticide training.
  • Forklift certification.
  • Flagger certification.
Technician II Additional Requirements
  • Certified Operator Pesticide License in the Turf category.
  • One of the following:
    • Landscape Technician Certificate one category.
    • Irrigation Technician certification golf or landscape.
PHYSICAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The physical demands listed herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. This list may not be all-inclusive.
  • This position includes sitting standing walking crouching squatting kneeling bending twisting climbing and balancing on a frequent to constant basis. Due to the physical nature of this position sufficient physical stamina mobility and dexterity are required as is the ability to hear and see to safely perform assigned tasks. Applicants must successfully pass a physical examination prior to being hired.
  • Must be able to frequently lift and or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds.
  • Must be able to read Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) before handling toxic or caustic chemicals or any other material requiring an MSDS.
  • Employees are frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions as work is most frequently performed outdoors. Employees may be exposed to inclement weather conditions including moisture humidity and/or extreme temperatures ranging from over 100 degrees to below zero degrees Fahrenheit.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts fumes airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals and vehicular traffic.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be very loud at times.
