Job Summary

Position: Early Childhood Special Education Coordinator

Organizational Scope:The Early Childhood Special Education Coordinator provides educational instructional and programmatic leadership for special education and related services. Reporting directly to the Director of Student Services the Coordinator works collaboratively with building administrators to develop the vision for delivery of special education services making recommendations for possible program revision or development while maintaining effective existing programs.

The coordinator shares responsibility with the building administration for supervision and evaluation of special education related services staff and Instructional Assistants. They are also responsible for serving as Local Educational Agency (LEA) Representative at team Early Childhood Special Education Coordinator will collaborate with colleagues and administrators to support student learning and contribute to a positive school environment. Responsibilities also include participating in professional development opportunities and attending meetings as needed to support students programs and overall school initiatives.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Keeps current with research and evidence-based practices and all legal requirements governing special education. Ensures compliance with Tiered Focused Monitoring and Coordinated program and Indicator review expectations
  2. Collaborates with and is a resource to school-based staff by providing purpose technical direction and advice to administrators building principals and instructional staff as they relate to the issues of legal compliance with mandated special education regulations and laws.
  3. Participate in long-range strategic planning and program projections regarding programming staffing enrollment growth and facility needs
  4. Assist in developing workshops and trainings for staff in order to improve compliance instruction and programming for students with disabilities
  5. Ensure timely communication with staff and parents. Involve parents in the evaluation and formation of educational planning.
  6. Monitor the progress of special education students using available data including progress reports report cards district-wide assessments and standardized testing.
  7. Communicate effectively with administration about inclusion specialized programs staff and students.
  8. Coordinate with building Teams when a referral is made to a district program and assist with the program referral process.
  9. Supervise and coordinate evaluation teams as part of the special education eligibility process.
  10. Monitor and complete the paperwork process associated with special education compliance including overseeing the development of Individualized Education Programs while maintaining timelines.
  11. Organize and conduct all IEP meetings including initial annual reevaluation progress review and resolution meetings.
  12. Read and review necessary I.E.P.s for compliance and accuracy.
  13. Conduct observations of special education staff including instructional assistants and complete the evaluation process as outlined by the District to support the educator evaluation process.
  14. Maintains an effective liaison and communication with parent groups staff members community agencies special education schools and programs and other professional organizations relating to special education.
  15. Assists in the budget development financial oversight and monitoring of Special Education Programming expenditures and needs including oversight of related grants.
  16. Collaborates in hiring and supervision of Special Education staff with building principals.
  17. Assists school leaders in daily scheduling coverage as needed.
  18. Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Student Support Services based on the targeted population of students being served as assigned.
  19. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar related or a logical assignment to the position.

Education and Experience:

  1. Masters Degree is required with a minimum of three years of experience preferably in a comprehensive school district setting.
  2. Licensure as a special education administrator is required or any combination of education and work experience. Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  3. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to relate well with studentsstaff administration parents and the community.
  4. Must be able to assist in the protection of students and school property and assist in fire and other emergencies or emergency drills as required by law and School Committee policy. The ability to work onsite in district schools and buildings is an essential function of this job.

Knowledge Ability and Skill:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to the instructional program; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students peers and parents; ability to work effectively with all staff at all levels of the school district; must be extremely organized detail oriented and possess a high level of skills in oral and written communication.


Physical Demands:

The environment includes regular interaction with students and staff varying room temperatures background noise and frequent transitions or interruptions common in school settings. Other work is performed in an office environment requiring minimal to light physical effort. This may include everyday discomforts and distractions typical of office settings such as proximity to colleagues frequent interruptions and moderate noise. Ability to walk stand kneel sit for prolonged periods of time in a school setting is to operate a computer keyboard and standard office equipment at efficient speed required.

Travel to district schools and buildings required.

Terms of Employment Evaluation of Performance and Salary:

The Coordinator is a 200-day full-time FLSA exempt employee. Terms of employment including salary are negotiated individually with the Superintendent of Schools. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the School Committees policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.

Benefits included are health dental and vision insurance; participation in a retirement system; paid time off; and other benefits in accordance with district policy and applicable collective bargaining agreements.The salary range reflects the typical compensation for this role though actual pay will be determined by skills experience and internal equity.
