In-School Suspension (ISS) Coordinator Job Description

Position Summary
The In-School Suspension (ISS) Coordinator is responsible for supervising and managing the schools ISS program. The coordinator provides a structured supportive environment where students assigned to ISS remain engaged in academic work while addressing behavioral concerns. The position supports school discipline efforts in alignment with Macon County Schools policies the North Carolina Student Code of Conduct and district behavior expectations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise students assigned to ISS and maintain a structured orderly and respectful environment
- Ensure students remain on task with assigned academic work during ISS
- Coordinate with teachers to obtain and distribute assignments materials and assessments for students in ISS
- Provide academic assistance and monitor completion of work
- Enforce school and district discipline policies and procedures consistently and fairly
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance behavior and work completion while in ISS
- Communicate with administrators teachers and counselors regarding student progress and behavior
- Support the implementation of behavioral interventions and restorative practices as appropriate
- Establish clear expectations for student behavior and promote accountability and reflection
- Facilitate behavior reflection activities goal setting or intervention supports as directed
- Maintain a safe and secure environment including monitoring student movement and adherence to ISS procedures
- Supervise transitions to and from ISS and coordinate with front office and administration
- Assist in de-escalating student behaviors and responding to discipline concerns appropriately
- Refer students to appropriate support services (e.g. counseling administration) when needed
- Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA and district policies
- Participate in required professional development and training including behavior management strategies
- Follow all Macon County Schools policies procedures and expectations
- Demonstrate professionalism fairness and consistency in working with students
- Perform other duties as assigned by school administration
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of student behavior management and discipline practices
- Understanding of adolescent development and effective intervention strategies
- Ability to maintain structure consistency and fairness in a supervised setting
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills
- Ability to de-escalate conflict and manage challenging behaviors
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff students and families
Physical Requirements
- Light to medium work classification
- Ability to stand walk and supervise students for extended periods
- Ability to respond quickly to student needs or behavioral situations
- Occasional lifting of materials (up to 25 pounds)
Evaluation
- Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Macon County Schools evaluation procedures
Terms of Employment
- Full-time position (10-month or 12-month depending on assignment)
- Salary based on Macon County Schools salary schedule
- Work calendar determined by the district

- Associate degree or higher preferred; OR
