Job Summary
About the City Distribution Division:
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commissions City Distribution Division (Water Department) is responsible for directing approximately 322 employees in the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system within the City and County of San Francisco. These activities include but are not limited to: operating and maintaining 11 pump stations 13 reservoirs 9 storage tanks and other ancillary appurtenances and equipment; installing repairing and maintaining over one thousand miles of water distribution mains including service connections and meters; four water systems comprised of the Potable Emergency Fire Water System (EFWS) Recycled and Groundwater; engineering and designing new main and feeder extensions; managing over 1000 acres of city owned property and rights-of-ways; and responding to all two-alarm or greater fires to assist the Fire Department in maintaining adequate water volume and consistent pressure while fighting fires.
Role Description:
The Communications Dispatcher II provides around the clock dispatch support to the departments managers and supervisors field crews and operations personnel.
Reporting Hours & Location:
- This is an as-needed temporary appointment not to exceed 1040 hours in a fiscal year.
- Candidate to cover any full shift or partial shift on an as-needed basis.
- Candidate may be called on short notice to work the day shift (7:00am to 3:00pm) swing shift (3:00pm to 11:00pm) or graveyard shift (11:00pm to 7:00am).

Essential Functions:
- Generates service requests for water-related emergencies; sends notifications to stakeholders related to water emergencies.
- Operates Centracom radio console to communicate with field units; makes announcements on the divisions public address (PA) system as necessary.
- Responds to mark and locate requests (811 call before you dig requests); communicates response efforts and potential property damage to the City claims department.
- Coordinates vehicle relocates and submits emergency excavation permits for water emergencies and leak response activities.
- Uses computer-based software to log all emergency response activities; documents accidents injuries and other incidences in the divisions electronic log system.
- Makes personnel calls to staff for overtime on behalf of supervisors and water distribution operators.
- Operates main entry gates and logs in after hour visitors; monitors surveillance equipment and intrusion alarms from on-site buildings.
- Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
Experience:
- Two years of verifiable experience operating a two-way radio communications base station receiving recording and transmitting messages from one source to another.
OR
- Combined total of two years of verifiable experience operating a multi-line telephone and a two-way radio communications base system. One year of this experience must have been operating a two-way radio base station.
Important Note:
One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

- Computer-based knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience using electronic database systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
- Knowledge of reporting procedures and emergency response programs
