Essential Job Functions
Provides engagingdaily classroom instruction in instrumental music including concert band and other instrumental ensembles as assigned.
Develops students musical skills including tone production rhythm music reading technique and ensemble performance.
Designs and delivers coherent instruction based on knowledge of music pedagogy instrumental techniques and best practices in music education.
Plans lessons aligned with theVirginia Music Standards of Learning and division curriculum guidelines.
Prepares for classes assigned and maintains evidence of lesson preparation upon request of building administrators.
Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of students with varying musical backgrounds and skill levels.
Creates learning experiences that make music meaningful and accessible to all students while fostering creativity collaboration and discipline.
Uses a variety of assessment strategies including performance assessments rehearsals and written evaluations to monitor student progress.
Evaluates student learning provides constructive feedback and maintains accurate records of student progress.
Identifies individual group and program needs and uses instructional strategies and resources to support student learning.
Maintains a positive and structured classroom environment that promotes student engagement and respect for the arts.
Organizes and directs student performances such as concerts and school events that showcase student learning and growth.
Program Leadership Responsibilities
Supports and oversees theHigh School Band Program including concert band ensembles and instrumental music activities.
Directs and manages themarching band program including rehearsals performances at school events and participation in competitions as appropriate.
Oversees and collaborates with staff supporting thecolor guard programas part of the marching band.
Plans and supervises rehearsals and performances outside the regular school day when necessary during marching band season.
Organizes performances for school events football games concerts and community activities.
- Plans and directs seasonal concerts and prepares student ensembles for district and state band assessments and other adjudicated performances.
Supports recruitment and retention of students in the band program and encourages continued participation in instrumental music.
Maintains band equipment instruments uniforms and the music library.
- Assists with management of the band program budget and coordinates fundraising efforts to support program needs equipment and student opportunities.
Collaborates with feeder middle school music programs to promote continuity and growth of the high school band program.
Works with school administration families and booster organizations to support program success.
Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
Education and Experience
Required
Bachelors Degree in Music Education or related field from an accredited college or university.
Ability to obtain appropriate Virginia teaching license withInstrumental Music endorsementas required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
Knowledge of instrumental music pedagogy and ensemble instruction.
Preferred
Experience teachinghigh school instrumental music.
Experience directingmarching band and coordinating color guard programs.
Experience organizing concerts performances and music program events.
Prior teaching experience within a public school system.
