Building Assets Reducing Risk Secondary Coordinator Purpose
The coordinators role is to coordinate the BARR Implementation effort. The coordinator works with school counselors school social workers administrators teaching staff support staff and families to ensure that all students feel connected and supported in school. The coordinator ensures that staff is focused on meeting the needs of all students. The coordinator guarantees BARRs success by making appropriate adjustments to meet student and staff needs.
Key tasks and responsibilities
- Act as a liaison to staff and administration maintaining open communication channels with all school staff and administrators.
- Provide support and advocacy for all staff similar to a counselor supporting and advocating for students.
- Support I-Time through staff training scheduling providing materials and consultation throughout the year.
- Facilitate weekly Block Meetings
- Facilitate weekly Community Connect Meetings ensuring the team is reviewing level 0 1 and 2 students as needed in addition to level 3 students
- Meet weekly with the administration to discuss data trends coaching recommendations next steps progress and obstacles to implementation. Attend online Coordinator PLCs offered throughout the year by BARR Center. Solicit and respond to staff concerns by actively seeking information regarding what is working and what needs adjustment.
- Monitor academics truancy discipline and alcohol tobacco and other drug (ATOD) use trends.
- Coordinate efforts to communicate about BARR with families and coordinate the Family Advisory Council if applicable.
- Attend/organize/facilitate monthly BARR staff meetings/trainings. Organize and facilitate staff training at monthly meetings which could continue during the summer months if desired.
- Recruit community agencies as a resource to meet student and school needs.
- Coordinate with district data person/resources regarding school data for student attendance testing discipline and success/failure rates.

Spring of Previous Year
- Visit school staff in the lower grade(s) to identify students who may need support in transitioning to the next grade level and possibly a new school.
- Visit students in the lower grade(s) to tell them what their next school year will be like and answer any questions they may have. Have older student mentors help with this visit.
1st Quarter/Term
- Determine dates for all staff meetings/trainings and facilitate each meeting.
- Assist the school counselor with student and family orientations. Consider using BARR resources from the Member Portal to present to orientation attendees.
- Meet with staff to establish an effective communication system mindful of any existing issues regarding class size special education needs etc.
- Mail a letter to all families introducing Building Assets Reducing Risks.
- Plan a presentation for orientation so that families are aware of the BARR support their students will be receiving.
- Create an account for accessing the BARR Center Member Portal. Reach out to the BARR Coach as needed for additional accounts.
- Download the following tools from the BARR Center Member Portal: Block Meeting Spreadsheet Community Connect Spreadsheet Community Resources and I-Time Main Lists for Volumes 1-3.
- Familiarize yourself with the Shared Data spreadsheet provided by your BARR Coach.
- Register any new and/or untrained staff members in the BARR New Team Member Training. Ask your coach for more information.
- Coordinate with district data person/resources to collect data from the previous school year (i.e. attendance discipline failure rates and/or testing).
- Review the previous years academic attendance and discipline reports with staff in conjunction with a district data person. As a BARR team set goals for the quarter/term semester and/or year.
- Initiate and facilitate weekly Community Connect meetings which continue throughout the year.
- Share a BARR Community Resource information list with staff.
- Download I-Time Main Lists for the volumes your teams will use this year. Create copies and share them with BARR team members.
- Initiate and facilitate weekly Block meetings which continue throughout the year.
- Work to ensure teacher teams share at least 80% of students and have a common meeting time for block team meetings.
- Ensure the Counselor and Administrator responsible for the BARR Program students plan to attend weekly Big Block and Community Connect meetings.
- Create a plan to deliver the BARR Questionnaire to students at the start of the school year. It can be found on the BARR Member Portal. This data can be used to start conversations in meetings and with students early in the year.
- Ensure BARR team teachers coordinator and key support team members have access to the Student Information System.
- Ensure a system is in place for the systematic collection and sharing of student data.
- Send BARR Information to PTO School Board or District Office.

- Continue pulling weekly failure attendance and discipline data and coordinate the sharing of this aggregate data with your BARR coach.
- Continue regular meetings between the BARR Principal and the BARR Coordinator to discuss data next steps and current implementation progress.
- Send BARR Information to PTO School Board or District Office.
