PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Exam School Initiative (ESI) is a racial equity initiative intended to expand access to Exam Schools for students who have been historically underrepresented as compared to the overall BPS student demographics who have been historically underrepresented in the three exam schools: Boston Latin Academy (BLA) the John D. OBryant School of Mathematics and Science (OBryant) and Boston Latin School (BLS). The Office of Teaching & Learning seeks culturally responsive instructors who believe in the talent and potential of ESI students and will advance the racial equity mission of the program. ESI teachers will provide rigorous instruction during the four-week program while cultivating positive relationships with students and families.

SITE: Boston Latin School 78 Avenue Louis Pasteur Boston MA
General Description: The school nurse provides skilled nursing care and management of the special needs of students as well as medication administration. Routine emergency care is provided for students and staff. If necessary students are referred to their primary health care provider for an evaluation. For students with complex medical needs the substitute school nurse may act as a liaison for the school home and outside medical facilities. The school nurse promotes student wellness and assists in maintaining a healthy school environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Summer Site Nurse provides skilled nursing care and management of the special needs of students as well as medication administration. Immunization surveillance and routine health screenings are conducted annually. Routine emergency care is provided for students and staff. If necessary students are referred to their primary health care provider for an evaluation. For students with complex medical needs the summer site nurse may act as a liaison for the school home and outside medical
facilities. The summer site nurse promotes student wellness and assists in maintaining a healthy school environment.
Duties:
- Provide emergency medical care to students in all BPS summer learning programs at assigned site
- Administers and/or supervises the administration of prescription medication to students
- Counsels and/or educates students in small groups or as individuals concerning medical issues.
- Conducts formal and informal evaluations of medical conditions and develops accurate medical summaries on students
- Monitors and assesses compliance with immunization standards as per BPS and DPH regulations
- Develops and maintains contacts with medical persons or facilities who might provide direct service or consultation
- Establishes and maintains appropriate record keeping and reporting formats and procedures
- Maintains adequate and updated health records
- Serves as medical representative to evaluations and reevaluations obtains and interprets medical evaluation at these meetings
- Communicates with students teachers and families regarding student medical needs
- Communicate with ESI program staff and leadership team around any medical needs and incidences
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
- Current Boston Public Schools Nurse
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Massachusetts license as a Registered Nurse
- MA State Dept. of Education School Nurse License (All Levels)
- CPR & First Aid Certification
- Ability to meet the BPS Standards of Effective Practice
- Experience working with children and adolescents in public school/agency/human services setting
- Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
- Experience in summer learning programs support services in a school setting liaison and case management high risk multi-problem children and adolescents.
- BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom school and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS official languages:Spanish Creole (Cape Verdean) Creole (Haitian) Chinese Vietnamese Portuguese & Somali.
TERMS:
- $54/hour
- The individual who is hired to this position agrees to the 2026 BPS Summer Employment Terms .
- Additional work hours that exceed the (6) hours in a day will require approval from the Director of the Exam School Initiative and Coordinator of Targeted Programming
- Please be advised that pursuant to Massachusetts and Federal law BPS considers site coordinators to be professional employees (or exempt employees) and they are expected to work as long as necessary to complete the required work.
- The individual who is hired to this position consents to electronic sign-in procedures on site that is retained by BPS exclusively for audit and sign-in verification (payroll).
- Failure to report to work on a given day of instructional time will result in a loss of pay for that day.
- BASAS Members must complete all required S6500 days by the end of the school year to be eligible for this role.
- Job offers are conditional and based on sufficient student enrollment/attendance.
- Site-specific job requirements program hours and training schedules are to be determined by the ESI program. Agreement to site-specific terms is required for hire.
- Payroll will be processed on a biweekly basis after receipt of completed timesheets in accordance with the BPS summer payroll schedule.
- Terms of Employment-All employees must read and agree to the BPS 2026 Summer Program Terms of Employment.
