ABOUT THE ROLE
This role is responsible for providing a wide range of legal services including file management and document review preparing draft agreements and by-laws for the Police Services Board and Regional Departments; reviewing reports and monitoring legislative change; conducting searches and registrations; providing transactional support and completing research of case law/legislation/policies in support of requests for legal advice; preparing draft responses and assisting legal counsel in researching and preparing for attendance before Council and/or the Police Services Board.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
Drafts and prepares reports documents agreements and supporting material for all areas of practice in the Legal Services Branch with an emphasis on policing governance municipal and corporate matters.
Administers contracts to ensure compliance with contractual terms.
Performs due diligence including searches relevant to the practice area.
Conducts legal research utilizing online legal research databases and other electronic sources.
Responds to inquiries and resolves concerns as appropriate from York Regional Police Services Board York Regional Police Regional Departments legal counsel private sector interests other municipalities and police service boards and provincial ministries and agencies.
Prepares draft responses on behalf of legal counsel.
Monitors procedures and processes to ensure legislative compliance in the practice area.
Participates in formulation of policies and procedures relevant to practice area.
Liaises with Police Services Board staff client groups other municipal or police service board staff and other bodies as necessary to address issues and other matters affecting the Police Service Boards operating projects and activities.
Conducts corporate search resources if necessary.
Prepares by-laws for presentation to Council and Boards.
Provides guidance and mentoring to support staff as required.
Participates on committees work groups user groups task forces and special projects as assigned.
Ensures that services provided meet applicable customer service standards.
Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Successful completion of a Community College Diploma in a Law Clerk Program or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
Law Clerk - Minimum three (3) years experience as a law clerk in a private or public sector environment
Sr. Law Clerk - Minimum 5 years experience as a law clerk in a private or public sector environment.
Sound working knowledge of legislation relevant to the practice area.
General knowledge of Ontarios police governance and police service delivery framework municipal government structure policies processes responsibilities and of legal office practices and procedures.
Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer service communication team work initiative/self management and accountability and flexibility/adaptability.
Demonstrated effective planning and problem solving skills.
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work effectively.
Computer literacy utilizing MS Office software applications and proficiency using word processing spreadsheet scheduling and presentation applications and
