Job Summary

Our client is looking for a Clerk of Works to join their team.

Salary & Benefits:

Negotiable

Responsibilities:

  • Act as the primary daily on-site representative of the client providing independent oversight of construction works.
  • Conduct regular (daily/weekly) inspections of materials workmanship installation methods and compliance with approved drawings specifications bills of quantities and relevant standards (including Zimbabwe National Standards ZWS building regulations and any project-specific requirements).
  • Serve as the key interface and communication point between: The client / owner Engineering consultants (architects structural mechanical & electrical engineers) Project manager Main contractor subcontractors and suppliers
  • Attend and contribute to site progress meetings technical coordination meetings and handover inspections.
  • Identify document and promptly report any defects non-conformances deviations delays or quality issues to the project manager and consultants; monitor rectification works to satisfactory completion.
  • Monitor site progress against the approved construction program and highlight potential delays or program risks.
  • Verify materials delivered to site for compliance with specifications (including sampling/testing where required).
  • Maintain comprehensive site records including daily site diaries weather logs photographs non-conformance reports and inspection records.
  • Ensure adherence to health safety environmental and quality (HSEQ) requirements on site; report unsafe acts/conditions immediately.
  • Witness and verify critical tests (e.g. concrete cube tests pressure tests weld inspections) and installations.
  • Assist in final inspections snagging defect rectification and practical completion/handover processes.
  • Prepare concise accurate and timely reports for the client and project manager on site status quality and issues.

Key Skills:

  • Strong technical knowledge of building construction processes materials and trades (structural architectural finishes MEP services).
  • Excellent observation skills with meticulous attention to detail and ability to identify poor workmanship or non-compliance.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills able to liaise professionally and diplomatically with contractors consultants and client stakeholders.
  • Good report writing and documentation skills (clear concise and well-structured reports).
  • Sound understanding of construction contracts specifications and quality assurance procedures.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook) for reporting and record-keeping.
  • Knowledge of health & safety legislation and site safety management (advantage if holder of recent safety certification).
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining impartiality and integrity.

Qualifications:

  • Higher National Diploma (HND) / National Diploma / BTech Diploma in Building Science Construction Management Building Technology Civil Engineering or closely related field.
  • A relevant bachelors degree would be an advantage.
  • Minimum 3 years of post-qualification practical experience working on building/construction sites preferably in a supervisory inspection or quality control capacity.
  • Experience on industrial/factory/warehouse projects or upgrades will be highly regarded.
  • Valid drivers license (Class 4) and own reliable transport preferred (site mobility essential).
  • Previous experience acting as Clerk of Works Site Inspector or Resident Engineer.
  • Familiarity with Zimbabwean building regulations ZWS standards and local construction practices.
  • Membership or working towards membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. Institute of Clerks of Works or equivalent).
