Job Summary

About the role:

The Specialist Harmful Sexual Behaviours (HSB) Program provides a specialist trauma-safe and culturally safe response to children and young people who are displaying harmful sexual behaviours. The service provides opportunities for healing support counselling and a therapeutic response working holistically with all those around the child or young person.

The Specialist HSB Program assists children and young people and adults to recover from the harmful impacts of trauma and assists families and communities to support children and young people in the healing process.

The Counsellor will be responsible for ensuring the provision of professional child/young people adult and family counselling services in consultation with the Principal Practitioner and Pilbara Services Manager.


This is a Full-Time opportunity based in South Hedland within our Specialist Harmful Sexual Behaviour Program. The position reports to the Clinical Coordinator Specialist Harmful Sexual Behaviour Program.


Key Selection Criteria:

To be successful in this role the incumbent will have:

  • A knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and an awareness of the current issues faced by Aboriginal children young people and their families.
  • A knowledge and understanding of the impact of trauma including issues related to harmful sexual behaviours.
  • A relevant degree in Counselling Psychology Social Work Aboriginal Studies or a related field with experience is essential. A combination of Cultural knowledge and experience with Aboriginal healing practices will also be considered.
  • Experience in working therapeutically with children young people and families.
  • Demonstrated capacity in working collaboratively within a team and with internal and external stakeholders to foster strong working relationships.
  • Demonstrated written oral and interpersonal communication skills including the effective use of basic computer programs.
  • Evidence of personal values consistent with the values of MacKillop Family Services including a willingness to embrace the Sanctuary Model and Principles.

  • Valid and current Drivers Licence;
  • Satisfactory Criminal History Check (paid for by MacKillop);
  • Valid Employee Working with Children Check;
