Job Description:

Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Principal Contract Manager who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in Brisbane Australia.

Key accountabilities:

  • Strategic commercial oversight of a number of complex works packages within an alliance environment.

  • Direct responsibility for contract management activity on one of the works packages until that works package is completed.

  • Lead and manage a team of Senior Contracts Managers and Contract Managers.

  • Ensure the negotiation of contract and commercial terms of complex or strategic projects leading up to contract execution.

  • Oversee contractual correspondence to be issued to the customer and sub-contractors as required.

  • Ensure monitoring measuring and improving the level of implementation and effectiveness of the contract management tools processes and procedures.

  • Ensure the contracts team collaborates with project managers to ensure compliance with the terms set out within the upstream agreement with the customer.

  • Leading the engagement with counterparts within the customer organisation to manage contractual issues change management and adherence to governance processes.

  • Lead interaction with procurement team to ensure downstream terms and conditions are robust and dovetail with upstream terms as required.

  • Oversee the management of subcontractors to ensure downstream claims issues and variations are managed in accordance with the contract.

  • Oversee and support the Change Management process with the assessment of upstream changes in accordance with the mechanisms within the contract.

  • Liaising with stakeholders to develop relationships within a collaborative alliance setting.

  • Ownership and preparation of commercial reports and lead established reporting forums (Monthly and Quarterly performance reviews).

  • Present contractual information and briefings to senior alliance stakeholders.

Key knowledge and experience:

  • A bachelors degree in a relevant field.

  • 10 -15 years of expertise in contract and/or commercial management experience.

  • Experience in relation to working within lump sum and target outturn cost (TOC) contract models.

  • A combination of commercial and contractual literacy as well as an ability to achieve outcomes working collaboratively with alliance partners.

  • Proven experience in a risk sharing alliance model would be advantageous in the role.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Attention to detail and organisational abilities.

  • Knowledge and experience of working on complex rail projects is preferrable.

  • Financial acumen and understanding of financial reports.

  • Previous experience in quantity surveying or similar skills would be considered an advantage in this role.

  • Able to work within a team and adopt a proactive problem-solving approach.

These qualifications collectively equip the Principal Contract Manager with the expertise necessary to manage the contractual aspects of the program effectively ensuring that it aligns with project goals adheres to financial and legal requirements and meets established industry standards.
