Required Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED AND:
- 1 year of experience in animal care veterinary assistance laboratory research environment or related field.
Skills:
- Knowledge of all applicable requirements regulations and laws.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

- Ability to identify address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions.
- Ability to safely handle restrain and care for a variety of animal species.

Certifications:
- An American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT).

Working Conditions:
- Physical:
- Lift up to 30 pounds on a regular basis.
- Requires standing walking bending and lifting or moving cages equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Environment:
- Works in an animal facility. Handling all types of animals which may bite and scratch.
- Regular exposure to animals animal dander and waste materials.
- May involve working in warm humid or odorous conditions due to animal housing and sanitation processes.
- Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves masks gowns and eye protection.

The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City has an opening for a full-time Senior Lab Animal Husbandry Technician. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in clinical care of research animals rodent health surveillance and import/export coordination and may also include cage cleaning and sanitation handling and restraining animals feeding treatments and facility maintenance.
Duties:
- Observes feeds transfers and administers pharmaceuticals to laboratory animals maintains laboratory collects samples and maintains records.
- Observes animals for early manifestations of disease such as rapid or labored breathing or lethargy and reports to designated personnel.
- Provides food and water to laboratory animals
- Transfers animals from soiled to clean enclosures protecting individual identity of animals
- Ensures laboratory has stable temperature and humidity levels
- Ensures all equipment bedding and cages are clean and in working condition
- Reports any problems or deviations to designated personnel
- Collects blood tissue or fluid samples from animals.
- Restrains animals for examination or injection
- Administers pharmaceutical or biological products through intramuscular subcutaneous oral or topical route
- Maintains records of all activities of the animal laboratory
- Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position
