Bat Technician

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is hiring two (2) technicians for statewide bat research and conservation work. These positions play an important role in monitoring and conserving Wyomings bat populations. Duties include capturing and handling bats at roost sites conducting exit counts performing acoustic monitoring and collecting field data to support wildlife management decisions. Additional work may include landscape-level mist netting and non-technical caving.

This is a highly field-oriented position with a variable and flexible schedule often requiring long hours nights weekends and short-notice assignments. Technicians should be prepared to work in physically demanding and sometimes uncomfortable conditions including at night in cold weather and in areas with biting insects. The work may involve hiking long distances over steep rugged terrain while carrying heavy packs.

Positions are seasonal and will run from late April or early May through September (up to 5.5 months). This is a unique opportunity for individuals seeking hands-on field experience in wildlife research conservation and outdoor work across Wyomings diverse landscapes.

• Prepare/pack equipment for fieldwork.
• Work in a team to capture bats using traps and mist nets.
• Assist in WNS surveillance including wing swabbing.
• Deploy acoustic equipment without supervision.
• Drive long distances to conduct fieldwork.
• Work remotely for long periods both individually and in a team staging out of department-owned vehicles.
• Collect data with close attention to detail following established protocols.
• Close attention to biosecurity and decon practices.
• Data entry and proofing.

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Preference will be given to those with a high school degree plus 2 years of experience in fish and wildlife resource management research or habitat development or 2 years of college course work towards a baccalaureate degree in wildlife management or another closely related field.

• Experience handling bats preferred.
• Experience implementing the National White-nose Syndrome or other decontamination or biosecurity protocol strongly preferred.
• Experience or interest in working in the field conducting surveys and collecting field data.
• Experience or interest in acoustic or video data collection.
• Must have a valid drivers license and ability to operate a 4WD vehicle on- or off-road.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Must have a flexible schedule and be able to work long hours and different times and days (including weekends and nights as needed) on short notice.
• Must be able and willing to collect accurate data while working in challenging conditions.
• Work schedule will vary (including long hours weekends and nights as needed).
• This position will require overnight travel accommodation may include tent camping bunkhouse or hotels.
• Rabies vaccination is required for this position. Previous rabies vaccination and current titer is preferred. If unvaccinated must be willing to get rabies vaccination after start of employment.
• SARS-CV2 Vaccination strongly preferred.
