Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law offers professional post-secondary academic programming that qualifies graduates for admission to qualify for the practice of law in all Canadian jurisdictions. The faculty has 17 full-time professors two librarians and 18 administrative staff. The faculty also comprises the Law Library which serves faculty and students the legal profession and the broader UNB community.

WHAT WE OFFER

Full-time 5-year Term Fredericton campus On-Campus

Standard Work Hours: Mon - Fri 8:15 am - 4:30 pm 36.25 hours per week

Salary Range: $86606 - $118035 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Director of the Law Clinic the Supervising Lawyer is responsible for providing legal services to clients of the UNB Legal Clinic the overall administration of its practice liaise with community partners and organizational development. The Supervising Lawyer provides individual representation to clients in landlord and tenant law employment law human rights small claims and social benefits law. Other areas of law may be added in the future.

  • Provide legal services to clients of the UNB Legal Clinic.
  • Administer UNB Legal Clinic practice liaise with community partners and aid in organizational development.
  • Provide individual representation to clients in (the areas of law covered by the clinic) landlord and tenant law employment law and social benefits law.
  • Represent clients in court hearings and other proceedings when necessary.
  • Develop partnerships with community organizations law firms and other stakeholders to increase the clinics reach.
  • Supervise and mentor law students and provide them with relevant training including but not limited to: practice management client communication cultural competence and trauma-informed lawyering.
  • Provide guidance and support to law students to help them develop their legal skills and client management capabilities.
  • Review and approve all legal work performed by law students to ensure that it meets a high professional standard.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on complex legal issues and guide law students as needed.
  • Establish and adhere to administrative and practice management policies that conform to Law Society guidelines and best practices.
  • Support the clinics work in community outreach advocacy projects and public legal education initiatives.
  • Work with local and regional partners on broader access to justice initiatives.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • A Juris Doctorate Degree or a Bachelor of Laws degree.
  • Must be admitted to the bar in a Canadian province or territory and a practicing member of the Law Society of New Brunswick by the time of appointment without any practice restrictions.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of post-call experience including relevant experience in the areas of law at the core of the Legal Clinics mandate.
  • An equivalent combination of education and training may be considered.

Additional Strengths

  • Administrative leadership and managerial skills in a legal setting are considered a strong asset.
  • Experience or interest in teaching law students is considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of effective clinical education principles including cultural competence a genuine commitment to reconciliation and trauma-informed lawyering.
  • An established track record of advocacy work and knowledge of anti-oppressive practice is considered an asset.
  • A broad perspective on the role of a community law clinic in the context of low-income clients would also be valuable.
  • Legal Aid experience is considered an asset.
