GREY MOUNTAIN PRIMARY SCHOOL (GMP) Whitehorse

Home to the Kwanlin Dn First Nation and Taan Kwchn Council Grey Mountain Primary school is one of 11 Yukon schools that have joined the newly established First Nation School Board (FNSB) in the Yukon. Southern Tutchone is the traditional language of Kwanlin Dn First Nation and Taan Kwchn Council people.

Grey Mountain Primary school is a K-3 school with approximately 60 students. We are actively seeking committed and qualified School Wellness Specialist who are dedicated to living and being an active member of the community. Our educational professionals value authentic relationships and are committed to working with students community administration and the FNSB to make positive progressive changes to education outcomes for learners of Grey Mountain Primary School.

The School Wellness Position

The School Wellness Specialist works in collaboration with Kwanlin Dn First Nation and Taan Kwchn Council and school staff while receiving clinical oversight from Student Support Services to provide a broad range of direct supports and consultation services to students families and staff at Grey Mountain Primary School.

The position works collaboratively with learners families First Nation Government community service providers and educators to identify learners concerns and to provide supportive services which contribute to the success of all learners. The position plays an important role in working in partnership with the First Nation to localize and provide supports grounded in Kwanlin Dn First Nation and Taan Kwchn Council ways.

  • Relevant education or training in social work or a related field
  • Experience providing social work-related services which may encompass assessments consultation case management counseling crisis intervention and/or referrals.
  • Experience offering social and emotional support to children and youth.
  • Training in Restorative practices Critical Incident Stress Response/Debriefing and/or Violent Threat Risk Assessment
  • Experience working in rural settings is an asset
  • Experience working in partnership with First Nations community to localize supports is a preferred asset

Candidates who have education training and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Desired Knowledge Skills and Suitability
Candidates should have and may be assessed on:

  • Ability to work collaboratively and maintain an authentic relationship with theKwanlin Dn First Nation and Taan Kwchn Council people Community Elders and families promoting greater community involvement in school-based activities and educational programming
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to evaluate and record progress and motivate learners
  • Solid understanding of a philosophy of inclusive education
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and collaborative skills to work with parents and caregivers staff members coaches the First Nation School Board and other partners
  • Passion for developing and maintaining strong and respectful relationships and trust with students their families and the community as a whole
  • Demonstrated ability to implement practices that are grounded in restorative processes
  • Demonstrated ability to implement effective support systems to assist students (e.g. mentorship opportunities study groups)
  • Knowledge of and the ability to implement developmentally responsive care and restorative practices

Conditions of Employment:

  • Security Clearance including Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Valid class 5 drivers license

Job Requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to travel within Yukon
