Goodwill SWMI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Kalamazoo Michigan. Our nearly 300 dedicated team members help achieve our mission of improving the community by providing employment education training and support services tailored to individual needs across a six county territory. At Goodwill SWMI the work we do makes a difference in the lives of the individuals we serve and in turn in the communities in which we live.
Goodwill SWMI manages eleven retail stores (with attached attended donation centers and one stand-alone donation center) Contract Manufacturing Operations as well as Custodial & Janitorial business units. These business operations provide stability to our organization that is not always enjoyed by nonprofit organizations solely funded by outside sources.

** This position is in person only. **
** The Human Resources Generalist is responsible for performing a wide range of HR functions to support the organizations mission and team members. Primary responsibilities include payroll administration HRIS management policy administration staffing onboarding and training and development.**
This role requires a proactive professional who can manage both day-to-day HR operations and contribute to long-term organizational initiatives. The individual in this position must consistently demonstrate and promote the agencys core values of Success Collaboration People and Positivity in all interactions and responsibilities.
Essential Duties Responsibilities & Functions
  • Analyzes prepares and inputs payroll data using an automated system to produce accurate and timely payroll.
  • Maintains human resource information systems; compiles reports from the database(s); analyzes data.
  • Prepares weekly monthly quarterly and year-end reports for management.
  • Ensure accuracy and proper distribution of garnishments and other mandated deductions.
  • Maintains personnel files.
  • Lead recruitment tasks. May conduct new-hire orientation.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of employee changes and closures in the payroll database.
  • Report analytics both in response to queries and in support of strategic initiatives.
  • Assists in the evaluation of reports decisions and results of the department in relation to established goals.
  • Recommends new approaches policies and procedures to continually improve the efficiency of the department and services performed.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of personnel policies and procedures and employee handbook as approved by the Board of Directors President/CEO and Director of Human Resources.
  • Effectively communicates with all levels of the organization.
  • Assist with special Human Resources projects.
  • Regular travel to regional worksites is required.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
Job-Specific Competencies:
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Understanding payroll functions.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Excel MS Word.
  • Proficiency in data entry.
  • Good analytical and organizational skills.
  • Strong typing skills.
  • Ability to communicate appropriately with a variety of Goodwill stakeholders.
  • Curious looking at situations from different perspectives and following to conclusion.
Required Knowledge Skills and Competencies
  • Knowledge of payroll administration preferred.
  • Experience using Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS). Paycor experience would be an added bonus.
  • Core competencies for this position include communication proficiency ethical practice cultural awareness relationship management business acumen HR expertise organizational skills and technical capacity.
  • Bachelors degree in human resource management or a related field and/or equivalent education training and experience.
  • Expertise in federal state and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Experience serving diverse populations.
  • Valid drivers license. Reliable personal transportation.
  • This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies up to 20 pounds.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and theft-related background check and be insurable under the agencys automobile insurance policy.
