The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists to join the School of Media Film and Journalism as the Head of School and a professorship in any discipline of MFJ. MFJ is a vibrant School for creative and critical engagement with media journalism communications and screen studies. It offers a distinctive blend of theoretical depth and practice-based expertise offering cutting-edge facilities including the Monash Media Lab and extraordinary student-focused opportunities such as MOJO News and The Struggle. With a strong focus on digital media ethical storytelling and global perspectives MFJ is poised for its next phase of development and now seeks an ambitious leader to envision and deliver this.

MFJ delivers three of the highest performing and most exciting degrees offered in the Faculty of Arts - the Bachelor of Media Communication the Master of Communications and Media Studies and the Master of Cultural and Creative Industries. The School is home to some of Australias most dynamic and active academics and research practice technology change and innovation are key foci.

As Head of School the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership to the School of MFJ and will be a member of the Faculty executive and contribute to the development of the Faculty strategic plan. The appointee will inspire staff with a strong vision for education engagement and research. The Head of School will be expected to deliver a vision for the development of innovative educational programmes which create excellent experiences for students strengthen and grow the research ambitions of the School and seek meaningful and strategic partnerships with other academic endeavours and in industry.

In particular the appointee will play a leading role in driving strategic change for the disciplines of the School including ongoing development and modernisation of the curriculum and progressing work on decolonising research and teaching; fostering stronger industry engagement in all areas; and boosting recruitment in undergraduate and masters-level programs.

The Head of School will be part of a revitalised structure aligning staff to reinvigorated clusters of research excellence including the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub and the newly established Constructive Institute Asia Pacific which will drive the future of media film and journalism in the Asia Pacific region. The Head of School will shape the media landscape through these research centres impacting national policy enhancing curriculum and setting up the next generation of students.

You will have a doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline and a track record in any discipline area represented in the School. You will be a visionary leader who exhibits qualities of collaboration and collegiality and possess highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to liaise well with others and a demonstrated ability to encourage a culture of attracting external funding in the form of national competitive grants philanthropy other research income and industry partnerships.
