Job Description
The Office of Supportive Services home to The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program ( HEOP ) and Student Support Services ( SSS ) is seeking a Counselor for Academic Services for the Student Support Services ( SSS ) program. Student Support Services ( SSS ) is a Federal TRIO Program supported in part by funds from the U.S. Department of Education. The goals of SSS are to increase the retention and graduation rates of first-generation Syracuse University students from lower income earning families by providing support services that assist with addressing barriers to completion of undergraduate degree requirements. SSS at Syracuse University serves approximately 250 students annually.
Responsibilities
In collaboration with the Office of Admissions review student applications and make recommendations for admission to sponsored program. Coordinate presentations with the Admissions Office and Syracuse community high schools that provide information about Syracuse University and the sponsored program. Assess academic needs of students and develop appropriate plans. Conduct pre- and post-advising sessions for students. Monitor academic progress as defined by state and federal guidelines as well as the schools and colleges of Syracuse University and implement strategies on a timely basis for the purposes of increasing retention promoting student success. Provide holistic counseling services based on established theories of practice including developmental solution-focused and multicultural approaches to sponsored students to address academic financial career and personal issues. Assess students adjustment to the University and make appropriate referrals as needed. Monitor program students financial aid information and advise students of all state and federal guidelines and processes. Develop and instruct a pre-first year summer seminar for first-year students and transfer students that addresses issues of transition study skills orientation to Syracuse University and the Syracuse community academic and personal resources and the policies and procedures of Syracuse University. Develop and facilitate leadership activities (lobbying efforts advisory boards community service and leadership retreats) for program students and provide professional guidance for these activities.
