Description

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision this position is responsible for planning and coordinating activities and making recommendations on ways to revitalize and promote the downtown area through a comprehensive approach that attracts and supports businesses and builds relationships with the community. Reports to the Economic Development Director.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Coordinates activities of revitalization and downtown development with Main Street ensuring that communication between committees is well established.
  • Develops in conjunction with the Fairburn Downtown Development Authority and other applicable stakeholders strategies for downtown development using the National Main Street approach to downtown district revitalization.
  • Assists in coordinating the implementation of the Main Street Program and identifies potential short- and long-term economic development opportunities.
  • Coordinates and completes monthly and annual reporting and accreditation processes with Main Street America.
  • Implements marketing strategies in collaboration with the Citys Communications Department that will encourage business development and retain existing businesses.
  • Coordinates and enhance events promotions and advertising strategies with existing business district organization in collaboration with the Citys Communications Department to maximize the community image and retail opportunities.
  • Assist in scheduling coordinating and promoting new business ribbon cuttings in collaboration with the Citys Communications Department.
  • Assists the Economic Development Director with communications among local regional and state economic development agencies such as Chamber Georgia Power Economic Development Division and State ED Offices as requested by the City Manager.
  • Coordinates programs to ensure appropriate and attractive streetscape and landscape features signage banners ADA compliance and pedestrian safety.
  • Researches and applies for grants which support city-wide building and improvement projects and programs; monitors compliance with grant specifications and provides reports and documentation as required by the grant organization.
  • Coordinates and sustains partnerships to promote optimum Main Street business conditions; builds strong and productive working relationships with appropriate public agencies at the local and state levels; encourages a cooperative climate between Main Street interests and local public officials.
  • Coordinates event activities and volunteers for downtown events which may include Renaissance Ren Thursdays and Keep Fairburn Beautiful (KFB).
  • Operates a personal computer transcriber postage machine general office equipment or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions to include the use of word processing spreadsheet database presentation e-mail Internet or other computer applications.
  • Performs basic maintenance of computer system and office equipment such as backing up data replacing toner or refilling paper; coordinates service/repair activities as needed.
  • Attends annual Main Street training and required continuing education as part of the accreditation process;attends various meetings as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Associates Degree in Economics Public Administration Public Relations Marketing Business Administration or Urban Planning; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years of experience in municipal economic development public administration marketing community relations or related field; or any equivalent combination of education training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this job. Main Street program experience preferred.

Licenses or Certifications:

Valid State of Georgia Drivers License

Main Street 101 Certification by the Georgia Office of Downtown Development a plus

Special Requirements:

Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and an acceptable driving record.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of National Main Street Program principles and goals.
  • Knowledge of economic development and business retention and recruitment.
  • Thorough knowledge of economic development processes and practices in the areas of marketing and business development economics business administration economic development and workforce development.
  • Knowledge of the principles of governmental organization and administration and the ability to make routine decisions in accordance with laws ordinances regulations and departmental/organizational policies.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices methods equipment and standard clerical procedures.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn the departments rules regulations policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of use of proper grammar and spelling.
  • Skill in operating a computer.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in time management organization and people.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with all levels of staff management agencies and the public.
  • Ability to learn understand and apply the concepts practices and procedures of the department.
  • Ability to network and develop relationships with real estate and site selection professionals.
  • Ability to research compose and submit grant applications.
  • Ability to schedule organize and execute assigned tasks and understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to develop newsletters and other graphic materials for printed and online distribution.
  • Ability to pay close attention to details.
  • Ability to handle several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to understand and follow quickly and accurately oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and maintain accurate records. Ability to maintain alphabetical and chronological files.
  • Ability to work independently without specific instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the general public.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to employees and vendors in person and by telephone.
  • Ability to have good judgment tact and professionalism.
  • Ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects including the human body. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.
