Role Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD Student to join our Research and Development team under the EDB-IPP (Economic Development Board - Industrial Postgraduate Programme) contract. As a PhD Student you will contribute to cutting-edge research focused on sustainability and wellbeing in residential homes specifically in the domain of HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) control. This role offers a unique opportunity to work in world-class laboratories at both NUS (National University of Singapore) and Bosch contributing to innovative solutions for enhancing thermal comfort and minimizing energy consumption.
What you will do (Key Responsibilities)
- Conduct research on the use of sensor data collected from real users to monitor behavior and physiological information along with indoor/outdoor environmental data.
- Characterize the needs of individual users in terms of comfort and wellbeing to inform the development of advanced controls for residential AC systems.
- Develop and validate behavior-based advanced controls for HVAC systems with a primary focus on the bedroom environment and sleep quality optimization.
- Explore control optimization opportunities in other indoor areas.
- Collaborate with the team to explore the use of sensor systems AI and control principles to enhance thermal comfort and wellbeing while minimizing energy consumption.
- Contribute to publications and presentations to disseminate research findings.
Qualifications :
What Were Looking For (Qualifications & Skills)
- Singaporean or Permanent Resident (to be eligible for EDB-IPP program). This is a requirement of the EDB-IPP program.
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical) or a related field with AI and programming experience.
- Must fulfill the National University of Singapore (NUS) PhD program requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Curious self-motivated and a team player with a passion for tackling real-world problems through research.
- Relevant research experience in the field of HVAC artificial intelligence data science control engineering or building sustainability.
Bonus Points If You.
- Knowledge of air conditioning systems modeling and control principles.
- Awareness of recent research and development methods related to the sustainability of the built environment thermal comfort and energy management.
- Experience with deep learning frameworks such as Pytorch or Tensorflow and machine learning libraries such as scikit-learn.
- Experience with IoT hardware and sensors data collection & analysis and cloud computing platforms.
- Strong academic record with at least one publication in top-tier conferences or peer-reviewed journals. Fresh degree holders with excellent academic results are also encouraged to apply.

About the IPP PhD program:
The Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) Industrial Postgraduate Programme (IPP) is an initiative by EDB to build a pool of postgraduate manpower in Singapore with critical R&D skill-sets for R&D roles in the industry through graduate training in a corporate R&D environment. EDB will provide funding support to the participating company and trainee including the IPP trainees tuition fees. The support duration for each trainee is capped at 4 years per PhD or 2 years per MSc.
