Full time starting salary is normally in the range 32546 to 35116 with potential progression once in post to 39355

Grade: 6

Full Time Fixed Term contract up to September 2027

Background

Applications are invited to work on a new research project funded by Shionogi BV Measuring cognitive outcomes in people with intellectual disability developing new play-based measures of executive functioning for children with intellectual disability. The research assistant will engage in tasks related to project initiation participant recruitment data collection data management and analysis report writing preparation of manuscripts and materials for publication and dissemination and related project administration. The post will suit candidates with an interest in clinical psychology and developmental psychology. The candidate will have the opportunity to benefit from a range of training and supervision opportunities while in post.

The successful applicant will be based in the School of Psychology University of Birmingham. Appointees will work under the direction of Professor Caroline Richards and Dr Rory Devine alongside collaborator Dr Hayley Crawford at University of Warwick. Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Collect research data from children with rare neurogenetic syndromes via play-based standardised psychological measures literature reviews and research interviews.
  • Analyse research data as directed.
  • Present research outputs including drafting parts of academic publications for example at seminars and as posters.
  • Develop or adapt techniques models and methods to address the study questions.
  • Deal with challenges that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines such as recruitment.
  • Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research such as organising group meetings and managing the research group calendar.
  • Liaise with NHS Trust third sector organisations education organisations to facilitate recruitment.
  • Adhere to and support amendments to NHS ethical approvals.
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.
  • Promote equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.

Person Specification

  • Achieved at least a 2.1 degree in Psychology or closely-related discipline.
  • Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques working with children with intellectual disability and their families and related professionals.
  • Experience of collecting behavioural data from children.
  • Experience working and communicating with people with intellectual disability and/or other clinical populations.
  • High level analytical capability.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively.
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader administration processes.
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project.
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort.
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010 and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
