Title: Lead Driver
Reports To: Transportation Manager
Position Purpose: Coordinates with Transportation Supervisor to develop schedules for transporting students between home and school and extracurricular activities; monitors and adjusts routing assignments and changes throughout the school year; operate vehicles when needed to fill in for absent drivers; dispatch and communicate between vehicle drivers school and parents when not driving; monitors completion of vehicle drivers daily log books; monitors tracking of wheelchair logs; collects and reviews daily vehicle inspection sheets and forwards them to the Transportation Manager and; serves as first point of contact for responding to student behavior concerns and communicating with special education staff as needed; confirms hours and absences and submits them to Transportation Supervisor schedules and monitors completion of annual vehicle evacuation drills for each school; coordinates with Transportation Manager to address incidental and minor repairs on buses; performs related work as required or assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Must be able to pass a DOT physical;
- Must have a current TB test;
- At least one year of experience in driving some type of motor vehicle (which may be a private automobile) including experience throughout each of the four seasons;
- Operating computers and iPads.
Physical/Emotional Requirements:
- Periods of walking/standing;
- Negotiate and climb stairs;
- Mobility function to include sitting turning reaching lifting bending and kneeling;
- Requires driving skills to include motor vehicle operations in inclement weather and limited lighting conditions.
- Employees employed in safety-sensitive positions such as bus drivers will be subject to random drug testing by law.
License:
- Valid Kansas Class B License with S and P endorsement;
- Valid Defensive driving CPR and First Aid Certification;
Performance Responsibilities:
- Assist in recruiting and interviewing prospective drivers;
- Maintain a roster of drivers and their assignments;
- Ensure trip drivers logbooks are properly maintained;
- Ensure that all transportation vehicles are clean and ready for service;
- Lead and monitor the work of other vehicle drivers;
- Frequently ride with drivers to evaluate their knowledge skills and performance standards related to efficiency safety and legality;
- Coordinate training activities for Transportation and District employees in accordance with the Transportation Manager.
- Facilitate the Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) program for the Transportation Department;
- Operate district vehicles safely and efficiently;
- Perform the duties of vehicle drive when operating district vehicles;
- Must be capable of understanding the basic types of handicapping conditions of the students they transport;
- Monitor City of Topeka road projects and identify potential operational route issues for drivers;
- Manage task priorities to meet deadlines;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with drivers District employees contracted vendors and Transportation staff;
- Read and comprehend fine print such as schedules spreadsheets etc.;
- Conduct driver check-in to be sure all routes are covered make road condition calls to determine if conditions require a delay check driver logs and mileage sheets for accuracy general record keeping etc.
- Maintain driver training records in accordance with Federal State and District requirements and policies.
- Evaluate TPS Transportation videos as needed or requested;
- Perform other tasks as directed by the Transportation Manager
Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Federal State and City motor vehicle laws;
- Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to the transportation of students;
- Efficient in safety and vehicle evacuation;
- Understand child abuse reporting procedures;
- Effective verbal and written communication skills. Should be able to adapt communication style to suit different audiences;
- Ability to adapt to a changing work environment and high-pressure situations;
- Ability to motivate self and others;
- Ability to problem solve issues ranging from parents school staffs drivers and Transportation staff.
Terms of Employment: This is a full-time position. Start times may vary.
