A brief overview of the role

We are looking for a keen and enthusiastic research assistant to work with us (Dr Kate Bailey Dr Luke Holden and Prof Danielle Ropar) on a project to understand male UG Psychology student experiences within our School. It is well-known that there is a gender imbalance in studying Psychology at University with females making up 80% of the current undergraduate student body. We are aware that perceiving oneself to be part of a minority within a group can have an impact on an individuals experiences and would like to know more about how this might impact on our male UG students in the School.

We have already interviewed a sample of current and recently graduated male Psychology students and gleaned some very interesting insights. We are now keen to use these findings to develop some initiatives to support male Psychology students in the School and would like a student partner to continue the work with us on this project. There is some degree of flexibility in the exact tasks and activities you will be involved with as we are keen for the successful student to help shape the project; however indicative duties are indicated below.


Start Date:18/06/2025
End Date: 09/07/2025
Working Hours:Approx 38 hours in total; this can be worked in a single week or spread out across weeks until the end date
Pay Rate: 16.78 per hour plus holiday pay
Location: School of Psychology/Remote
Dress Code: Casual

Duties and responsibilities

We are keen for the successful candidate to help us shape this project with their own insights; however likely tasks for this role will include:

  • Research (via a literature search) on initiatives to support students studying as part of a (gender) minority.
  • Co-development of initiatives/ a schedule of events to support male UG Psychology students in the School for the next academic year.
  • Drafting measures (e.g. survey feedback forms) to evaluate the initiatives created for example through Qualtrics software.
  • Help with recruitment of participants.
  • Processing and interpretation of interview data (i.e. qualitative data).


Attributes required for the role:

Above all we would like to work with a student who has a genuine interest in collaborating with us and feels that they have insights to share that they can contribute to the project.

In addition we are seeking applicants who:

  • Are passionate about enhancing the student experience for all students in Psychology.
  • Have an interest in issues relating to Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI).
  • Can demonstrate their developing interest and skills in research especially searching and reviewing literature.
  • Can think creatively and critically to suggest solutions to challenges.
  • Have experience with or willingness to learn Qualtrics survey software.
  • Can communicate and collaborate professionally with staff and students.
