Reporting to the Food Services Manager the Head Chef is responsible for creating menus and preparing meals for clients of the Shelter. The Head Chef will ensure meals are ready to be served in compliance with all health regulations with the support of kitchen staff and volunteers. They will also ensure all food deliveries from suppliers and donations are received recorded sorted and stored in the most efficient manner. The Head Chef will be responsible for the food services operations at Central Shelter.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead and support staff and volunteers in the process of preparation service and cleaning of meal services
Plan and prepare healthy and nutritious meal plans and rotating menu
Create menus that fit the budget and available donations
Receive verify orders and store all purchased food and kitchen items
Work collaboratively with support staff to keep stored food rotations current
Maintain Occupational Health & Safety standards and records
Know and follow the Environmental Health Services Guidelines regarding how food is prepared handled and stored
Keep all food inventories up to date
Track statistics including but not limited to temperature audits serving stats meals served
Ensure cleanliness is maintained in kitchen
Food pickups may be required
Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
A minimum of 2 years experience working in the Food Service industry is preferred
Experience with menu planning large quantity cooking and working with donated goods is an asset
Ability to lead a team consisting of paid staff and volunteers
Ability to resolve conflicts as they arise
Working knowledge of OHS and other food guidelines
Valid Food Handlers Certification
Valid First-Aid Training
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position is often fast-paced and requires substantial effort to analyze information and problem solve
Potentially high-pressure environment the ability to adapt to change and find creative solutions is essential
This position requires varied mental and emotional effort must be able to respond appropriately to intense situations provide conflict resolution and work directly with clients at risk
Moderate to significant physical effort: must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds extensive periods of standing walking and reaching
Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times which could result in them uttering threats discriminatory statements and other insults at your person. This may be in a raised voice or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive
o Training on how to respond is provided but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry we require our employees to agree to not detract from and to sign our statement of faith
Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Employment Security and/or Vulnerable Sector check is required
Access to a reliable vehicle is required
A valid drivers license drivers abstract $2 million dollar liability insurance required
This position requires the use of a personal vehicle for company use. The candidate must have a valid drivers license and maintain $2M Vehicle Liability insurance on the vehicle being used.
This position also require requires the use of a company vehicle. Candidate must have and maintain valid drivers license and will need to consent to a drivers abstract request.
