Position Purpose
The Senior Writer and Editor plays a key role in shaping uOttawas institutional voice by developing highimpact content that supports the Universitys business priorities and notoriety. As an expert in storytelling strategy the Senior Writer and Editor provides expert guidance on written communications ensuring alignment across all platforms and initiatives and contributes to the evolution of content strategy through leadership in narrative development and editorial excellence for a multitude of channels such as the Web the University of Ottawas main social media accounts and targeted to current and potential students here in Canada and around the world.

In this role your responsibilities will include:

  • As the Universitys content expert for storytelling establishes best practices for narrative communications ensures that the most uptodate editorial practices are applied to Communications and Public Affairs materials products and digital communication platforms. Facilitates the teams adaptation to changing patterns in digital marketing and communication practices.
  • Leads the development of narrative approaches and written content for major institutional initiatives working autonomously to shape tone clarity and impact in alignment with overarching editorial direction calendar and content strategy.
  • Manages and coordinates all stages of content production including research interviewing writing editing curation adaptation translation language review and quality control to ensure content is polished accurate and effectively communicates the intended message.
  • Ensures content complies with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) best practices and meets bilingual requirements and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) according to University of Ottawa policies to optimize its performance for search engines and its accessibility to different audiences.
  • Builds strong relationships with clients through regular and frequent project consultations to identify their needs and requirements. Advises stakeholders on strategic messaging and institutional storytelling opportunities.
  • Advises and mentors decentralized content creators helping them translate complex topics into compelling and engaging communication products while ensuring quality accuracy and consistency of messaging and tone.
  • Monitors content effectiveness through data analysis and feedback sharing key insights and performance reports with the editorial committee and senior management to inform and guide future strategies.
  • Oversees the work of external suppliers such as freelance writers reviewing and editing content.

What you will bring:

  • University undergraduate degree in journalism literature or communications or a related field.
  • Seven (7 experience in writing and editing in a corporate communication environment for a large and complex organization (ex. higher education healthcare)
  • Proven experience in crafting compelling narratives tailored to diverse audiences ensuring clarity and engagement in both technical and nontechnical contexts.
  • Exceptional proficiency in writing and editing in one official language with strong skills in the other ensuring clarity consistency and engagement across diverse platforms and audiences.
  • Skilled in translating specialized research and institutional priorities into accessible compelling narratives for the general public academics policymakers alumni and other stakeholders.
  • Strong experience providing expert advice training and mentorship to content creators and crossfunctional teams ensuring alignment with organizational standards and brand voice.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement content strategies that align with organizational goals and communicate vision and values effectively.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and a strong ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously working collaboratively across teams to produce highquality results under tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of inclusive writing practices with demonstrated expertise in applying accessibility standards and inclusive language to written materials ensuring content is understandable and engaging for diverse audiences.
  • Indepth understanding of SEO principles and AODA compliance with experience optimizing bilingual content for digital platforms.
  • Experience in monitoring and analyzing content performance metrics using insights to guide future storytelling and strategy.
  • Proficiency in using CMS platforms (e.g. WordPress Drupal) analytics tools (e.g. Google Analytics) and familiarity with project management tools and workflows.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to interact with creative professionals in a positive manner in a fastpaced environment.
  • Good knowledge of computer systems including video and image editing software (e.g. Adobe Suite Final Cut Pro Canva) Microsoft Office databases etc.
  • Fluency in French and English (written and spoken) with demonstrated experience creating content in both languages.

If this is a frontline position with responsibilities to interact with students selected candidates must be rated at the Low Advanced proficiency level or higher for both oral comprehension and reading comprehension in their second official language. The rating is determined by a proficiency test designed by the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute.

Prior to May 1 2022 the University required all students faculty staff and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid19 as defined in Policy 129 Covid19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
