Job Description

Reporting to the Manager Professional Practice this position will support the education and development of the Nurse Extern by providing mentorship support team integration extern coordination and overall program implementation and evaluation at the point of care. To accomplish this the Clinical Extern Coordinator must take an active role by working closely with the externs to provide coaching training support helping them define a strong career development plan and serve as a role model for the extern. You demonstrate leadership collaboration change management and problem solving skills. You have excellent organizational skills and have the ability to prioritize workload. You also have excellent communication skills and demonstrate strong conflict resolution skills. You have a good understanding of professional practice standards and CNO standards of practice and demonstrate a commitment to the organizational vision mission values and service excellence.


Qualifications :

  • Current registration and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Masters Degree considered an asset
  • Previous experience as Clinical Instructor or placement supervisor preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in teaching working with learners or precepting
  • Minimum of 3 years of acute care experience

Core Competencies:

  • Support training and integration of Externs at the organizational and unit level by demonstrating a good understanding of the College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards when working with Unregulated Healthcare Workers
  • Support Nurse Externs practice and integration into the clinical area in accordance with organizational and professional standards and in collaboration with clinical teams
  • Contribute to Extern onboarding and ongoing education and practice development within the boundaries of the extern role
  • Create adapt and deliver orientation and learning resources using various delivery methods in accordance with organizational and unit policies/practices/guidelines
  • Provide an ongoing presence on the clinical unit(s) to support the ongoing education and development of the externs as well as tracking and documentation of skillset achievement
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the Extern role including the creation of learning goals and objectives. Development of action plans and identification or any barriers to learning will also be an expectation
  • Serve as a liaison and conduit between unit leadership Professional Practice and Operations

Hours: Currently days including weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
