QUALIFICATIONS
A Masters degree in Reading is required along with at least three years of successful teaching experience where reading instruction played a significant role. Candidates must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement as a Reading Specialist or be enrolled in the Microcredential course to obtain this endorsement. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience utilizing a variety of data sources such as VALLS quarterly benchmarks and SOLs to inform instructional decisions and improve student outcomes. The candidate must demonstrate extensive knowledge and expertise in literacy instructional best practices and differentiated instruction. Strong communication skills both written and verbal are essential as is the ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with teachers administrators and diverse teams. The candidate should possess expertise in current assessment practices word study methodologies and a thorough understanding of the five components of literacy: phonemic awareness phonics vocabulary fluency and comprehension. Additionally the candidate must exhibit the ability to inspire a schoolwide passion for literacy and have a solid understanding of the Virginia Literacy Act. A commitment to fostering a culture of literacy and supporting educators in implementing effective instructional strategies is essential for success in this role.
DESCRIPTION
The Reading Specialist serves as a literacy expert providing leadership assessment and instructional support to implement a comprehensive literacy program. This role involves coaching and mentoring teachers in best practices aligning instruction with current research and fostering a schoolwide focus on literacy achievement. This position assesses student progress analyzes data and recommends targeted interventions to support struggling readers. By collaborating with teachers administrators and families the Reading Specialist promotes effective literacy instruction and drives student success.
GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)
SUPERVISION
Work is performed under the direct supervision of the School Principal and Asst. Principal in consultation with division level administrators.
WORK CONDITIONS
The Reading Specialist works in a school environment supporting teachers administrators and students throughout the building. This role requires flexibility to work in classrooms collaborate in team meetings and provide oneonone or smallgroup instruction. The position involves frequent standing walking and occasional lifting of instructional materials. Work hours typically follow the school schedule with occasional extended hours for meetings professional development or school events.
