Job Description Summary

Novartis seeks an experienced chemist and leader to join as Chemistry Head for Immunology. You will be a member of the senior leadership team of Global Discovery Chemistry. Immunology is a core disease areas for Novartis and is critical portfolio for Novartis/BR including high patient need and global market potential.

Job Description

Major Accountabilities

  • Responsible for managing the IMM chemistry portfolio
  • Defines overall strategy & vision in collaboration with DA leadership team
  • Conceives and contributes to basic research programs within the IMM franchise
  • Delivers novel and druglike molecules for development and ensures competitive portfolio
  • Provide strategic advice and vision to Research Head and scientific leadership for own field.
  • Transforms the research culture in a sustainable way responsible for representing BR at senior levels (both internally and externally)
  • Supports and influences integration of new technologies to enhance productivity
  • Collaborates with a core group of the IMM DA head Program Directors as well as DA Chemistry Heads GDC Technology Platforms appropriate Synthesis and Discovery Technologies and drug discovery partners PKS PCS CHAD
  • Leads external academic collaboration with an objective to bring new scientific techniques to Novartis research. Member of commercial collaborations with biotech industry with the objective of codiscovering compounds which could be licensed by Novartis.
  • Member of several BR/Novartis research committees including but not limited to:
  • Disease Area Decision Board (DADB): major duties include the overall review management and delivery of DA projects from Target Entry to POC.
  • IMM Leadership team: duties include the oncology portfolio review and prioritization resource planning and allocation
  • GDC global leadership team: major duties include the setting of and delivery of GDC objectives as part of overall research objectives candidate quality implementation of GDC strategy and initiatives. GDC operational issues resource discussion promotions budget control and capital expenditure talent development safety personnel issues promotions etc. interaction with site management and operations interaction with RX.
  • Leadership: Sets scientific & cultural objectives for department ensures top notch talent development & capability building to drive innovation prioritize and plan resources Acts as role model and mentor for all associates. Develops and trains next generation of leadership.
  • Proposes and implements unit operations and capital budgets

Key Performance Indicators

  • Achieve GDC IMM chemistry objectives and contribute to global GDC goals & ensure competitive portfolio
  • Contribute to the success of BR/GDC programs by delivering relevant high quality and accurate data or products in a timely and reliable manner
  • Develop and implement innovative technologies in GDC/BR and facilitate the discovery and development of new
  • Achieve talent pipeline objectives (people development with high performance and high potential)
  • Achieve world class efficiency benchmarked against other Biotech/Pharma companies
  • Adhere to Novartis standards in particular quality ethical health & safety and environment (HSE) and information security (ISEC) standards

Essential Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry or related field
  • Minimum 10 years of drug discovery experience in academic and/or pharma environment
  • Track record of success in drug discovery ideally with a proven record of delivering multiple drug candidates to the clinic
  • Excellent communication skills ability to influence and collaborative style to thrive in a highly dynamic and matrixed organization
  • Maintain a strong presence in the scientific community evidenced by peerreviewed publications and presentations
  • Experience in leading a large >10 chemistry group with proven experience in managing and nurturing the growth of scientists

Desired Requirements:

  • Minimum two years of postdoctoral experience in synthetic and/or medicinal chemistry or equivalent field
  • Experience in at least one disease area
  • Experience as project leader group leader or department leader
