Medicines for All (M4ALL) a part of Virginia Commonwealth University is an entrepreneurial impactoriented institute dedicated to dramatically improving global access to lifesaving medicines. We achieve this through synthetic process innovation and advanced technology deployment to reduce costs and waste in small molecule drug substance manufacturing. Our work supports treatments for diseases such as TB malaria HIV oncology metabolic diseases CNS and immunology.

The Associate Director/Director of Commercial Development will be the first leader in this role responsible for establishing and building the commercial function from the ground up. This role will design and implement strategies for market development business growth and partnership cultivation ensuring alignment with M4ALLs mission and longterm vision. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in business development and commercial strategy within the pharmaceutical or life sciences sector with experience in creating and scaling commercial functions.

Applicants who meet the required qualifications and have varying levels of experience are encouraged to apply. The role will be filled at either the Associate Director or Director level depending on the unique qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Commercial Strategy and Function Development

  • Establish and lead the Commercial Development function setting the strategic vision and creating foundational processes for client engagement partnership development revenue and margin growth and optimal utilization of M4ALL service assets.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive market strategies that align with M4ALLs mission and expand its impact within the pharmaceutical sector.
  • Design and implement key performance metrics and reporting frameworks to evaluate commercial effectiveness and growth.

2. Business Development and Market Expansion

  • Identify and cultivate new business opportunities building relationships with industry stakeholders clients and potential partners.
  • Conduct indepth market research and competitor analysis to position M4ALLs offerings effectively and identify growth opportunities.
  • Develop strategic plans to enter new markets and enhance M4ALLs market share ensuring alignment with the organizations mission and operational goals.

3. Partnership Development and Client Relations

  • Build and maintain relationships with existing and prospective clients serving as the primary point of contact and ensuring satisfaction with M4ALLs services.
  • Develop partnership models and collaboration agreements that support longterm growth and align with M4ALLs objectives.
  • Represent M4ALL at industry events conferences and forums to increase brand visibility and establish M4ALL as a thought leader in sustainable pharmaceutical manufacturing.

4. Revenue Generation and Financial Oversight

  • Develop revenue generation strategies including pricing models and service offerings that align with M4ALLs value proposition and industry standards.
  • Work with finance to set revenue targets monitor commercial performance and adjust strategies to meet or exceed financial goals.
  • Report on revenue business development efforts and market trends to executive leadership providing insights for strategic decisionmaking.

5. Team Building and Leadership

  • Build and lead a highperforming Commercial Development team establishing a collaborative culture focused on business growth and impact.
  • Mentor and develop team members setting clear goals and supporting their professional growth.
  • Develop training and onboarding programs to ensure team members are equipped to support M4ALLs mission and commercial objectives.

6. Marketing and Brand Positioning

  • Oversee the development of marketing materials presentations and clientfacing documentation that effectively communicate M4ALLs offerings and mission.
  • Collaborate with communications and marketing teams to develop brand positioning and awareness campaigns that support M4ALLs impactdriven objectives.
  • Establish a strong consistent brand presence across all commercial touchpoints enhancing M4ALLs reputation within the pharmaceutical industry.

7. Continuous Improvement and Innovation

  • Continuously assess and refine the commercial strategy to stay ahead of market trends and ensure alignment with M4ALLs goals.
  • Implement best practices and process improvements within the Commercial Development function to optimize efficiency enhance client satisfaction and maximize revenue.
  • Leverage data and analytics to assess the success of commercial initiatives making datadriven decisions for ongoing improvement.

8. Strategic Collaboration

  • Partner with internal stakeholders including finance operations and program teams to align commercial strategies with organizational priorities.
  • Act as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on market trends client feedback and growth opportunities.
  • Engage with industry networks and organizations to keep M4ALL at the forefront of industry trends and opportunities.
Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Education: Bachelors degree in Business Science or a related field;or the experience and skills that equate to a Bachelors degree.
  • Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in commercial roles within the pharmaceutical or life sciences industry with a strong background in business development and market strategy.
  • Foundational Experience: Proven experience in building and establishing a commercial or business development function from scratch including creating strategies processes and metrics.
  • Business Development Expertise: Demonstrated success in identifying cultivating and managing partnerships with the ability to secure and grow client relationships. Ability to effectively engage procurement technical chemical and pharmaceutical scientists in order to advance and secure business opportunities.
  • Market Knowledge: Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical industry market trends and regulatory environment. Strong understanding of cGMP manufacturing requirements as well as regulatory and environmental issues relevant for the pharmaceutical industry (to effectively serve as customer / prospective conduit to M4ALL services).
  • Strategic Thinking and : Ability to translate business goals into actionable strategies and execute with a resultsoriented approach.
  • Communication and RelationshipBuilding: Exceptional interpersonal and negotiation skills with the ability to communicate effectively with clients stakeholders and team members at all levels.
  • Commitment: Demonstrated commitment to upholding and embodying the organizations core values and mission.
  • Travel Requirement: This role requires regular travel as a core responsibility including both domestic and international trips. Candidates should be comfortable with travel to support operational collaborative or strategic initiatives across multiple locations.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Advanced Education: Advanced Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) Marketing or a relevant scientific discipline (PhD).
  • SectorSpecific Experience: Experience within a contract research development or manufacturing organization (CRO/CDMO/CMO) environment understanding the nuances of commercializing scientific services.
  • Revenue Generation and Financial Acumen: Proficiency in revenue modeling pricing strategies and financial analysis related to commercial activities.
  • DataDriven DecisionMaking: Experience with data analytics tools and CRM systems to assess client engagement market trends and the effectiveness of commercial initiatives.
  • Brand Development and Marketing: Experience in brand development and overseeing marketing strategies that support business development objectives.
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset: Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean or Six Sigma to optimize commercial processes.
  • Network within Industry: Established network of contacts within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry facilitating business development and partnership opportunities.
  • Innovation and Change Management: Experience in implementing new commercial processes with the ability to drive change and foster alignment across the organization.

TITLE DISTINCTION

The Director level will be distinguished by advanced expertise and extensive experience in developing and executing longterm innovation strategies embracing cuttingedge technologies and leading complex projects programs and teams.

REPORTING STRUCTURE
This role reports to the Chief Commercial and Strategy Officer and is intended to be a key supervisory position as M4ALL continues to expand. Additionally this role embodies everyday leadership with an expectation to lead through actions discussions decisions and interactions. As a role model within the organization you will influence others by consistently demonstrating the values and behaviors that drive our mission forward.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND LOCATION
This position is open to fully remote employees with the flexibility to work from home. Preference will be given to applicants living within close proximity to our primary worksite in Richmond Virginia as it is anticipated that this role will have significant opportunities to attend meetings events and other key engagements with partners in the local area. Travel to the Richmond site may be required for these occasions.

Since M4ALLs inception in 2017 we have received significant financial support from a diverse portfolio of major donors. This position is grantfunded with continued employment contingent upon ongoing funding.
