Job Description
JOB SUMMARY:
Costume Stitcher Is are costume artisans responsible for assembling costumes and performing advanced alterations on costume pieces for all venues marquee events and special events under the guidance of First Hands Lead Fabricators and other managerial supervision. Costume Stitcher Is should be proficient in hand sewing and machine sewing on both domestic and industrial machines. Some work may require contact with silicone latex wool fur and other allergens.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Sews costumes from material goods to full completion including all closures and finishing. Can work independently on basic projects and under the supervision of a lead or supervisor for complex projects. Costumes may require using finesse to create complex costumes with spandex/stretch fabrics silks/synthetic chiffons and satins furs and fleeces leathers/vinyl and engineered fabrics. Projects may range from dance costumes to suiting to creatures. Projects require sewing by hand and industrial machine.
- Perform repairs and alterations as directed on woven nonwoven stretch/lycra/spandex silks and other specialty materials using standard and computerized industrial sewing pressing and finishing equipment.
- Assists in fittings as directed on newly fabricated or purchased costumes for park use special events and marquee events. Able to maintain professionalism and confidentiality during the fitting process.
- Assists in extended costume crafting including but not limited to millinery stoning foams bead work detailed hand stitching dyeing fabric painting/distressing and some adhesive work.
- Assists in the layout and cutting of projects under supervision with understanding of grain knap and fabric saving techniques.
- Iron wash or prepare fabric as needed for fabrication projects. Intermediate understanding of textiles and fibers to help determine best practices when pressing laundering and working with various materials. Assist in cleanliness and organizations of the work areas.
- Understands and actively participates in Environmental Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy procedures training and team member involvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- AA or Bachelors degree in theatrical Costume Technology/Construction/Design or similar field such as Fashion/Apparel or Technical Theater/Film strongly preferred.
- Graduate degree in similar fields a plus.
EXPERIENCE:
- 2 years or more experience and knowledge in professional costume/garment fabrication with an understanding of live performance arts and costume usage.
- Demonstrated experience and proficiency at operating industrial and domestic sewing machines including but not limited to single needle industrial; industrial zigzag; overlock; merrow or serger; domestic straight and zigzag machines; industrial steam irons.
