Newton Public Schools Student Services

Job Title:

Director of Therapeutic Public Day Program Central High School.

FLSA Status:

(Exempt/Nonexempt)

Exempt; Unit B; 10month

Reports to:

Assistant Superintendent for Student Services/Director of Secondary Special Education

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

A Director of Public Day Special Education Programs oversees specialized public day schools that primarily serves students with emotional disabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Masters level or higher doctorate preferred
  • Licensed as a school psychologist/social worker/school adjustment counselor and administrator (administrator or director/supervisor or principal)
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in school psychology/social worker/school adjustment counselor
  • Ability to handle a multitude of varying and complex issues
  • Skills in program and staff development
  • Strong commitment to diversity initiatives
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES (NOT LIMITED TO):

  • Supervise and evaluate public school day staff
  • Participates and maintains an effective and culturally diverse learning environment among the entire school community (faculty staff support personnel students etc).
  • Fosters a creative and innovative learning environment in which all students are inspired to excel.
  • Establish standards and expectations for proper student conduct; support the appropriate methods to encourage discipline and commitment to adhere to established guides; maintain high expectations and motivation for all students to engage in continuous learning and development.
  • Initiates facilitates designs and implements programs and scheduling to meet student needs.
  • Maintains a clear and open communication process with all the internal and external school community. Keeps the school population informed of policy changes new programs opportunities etc.
  • Provide professional development and training opportunities.
  • Conduct monthly/weekly department meetings with public school day staff
  • Conduct regular meetings with high school and middle school staff (AP for Student Services HS Dept. Heads HS Asst. Dept. Heads)
  • Provide consultation with staff and administration asneeded including emergency consultation with staff regarding students atrisk
  • Meet with schoolbased teams including parents regarding specific cases
  • Meet regularly with the districts Student Services administrators
  • Works with the various members of central administration to solve school problems such as transportation student services operations etc.
  • Sets clear expectations for staff and provides ongoing feedback evaluations advice counseling and support to all staff members regarding their individual and group performance.
  • Keeps updated on changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings reading professional journals and other publications and discussing contemporary issues with colleagues and maintains commitment to educational technology.
  • Attends special events held to recognize student achievement and attends schoolsponsored activities and functions.
  • Consistent reliable and punctual attendance is essential for supervision and instruction of the students.
  • Other duties as needed

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work Environment:

  • This position is in a typical selfcontained school and office setting
  • This program may be expanded in the future to include a middle school public day program

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to travel between multiple school locations (must possess valid drivers license)
  • Ability to operate computer printer telephone copier facsimile machine and all other standard office equipment
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 15 pounds
  • Sufficient mobility to navigate within a large school building
  • This position is in a typical school and office setting. Some bending reaching lifting may be required. May be responsible for diffusing difficult situations including student restraint. Transportation is required.
