Job Description

THE POSITION

If you are passionate about our local forests and dedicated to safeguarding our natural resources an exciting opportunity awaits you. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources specifically within the Resource Planning and Information Division is on the lookout for a Forest Legacy Planner also known as a Forest Program Specialist. This role is part of the United States Forest Services Forest Legacy Program a federal initiative aimed at preserving forested areas that face the risk of being transformed into nonforest uses. The program achieves this by offering grant funds to facilitate the purchase of forestland or the acquisition of conservation easements ensuring the protection of these vital ecosystems.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Forest Program Specialist your primary responsibility will be to support the State Foresters office various Divisions and Bureau field offices by effectively coordinating promoting and managing the US Forest Services Forest Legacy Program (FLP) throughout Pennsylvania. In this role you will oversee the administration of the FLP statewide and spearhead the development of conservation projects funded by the program. Additionally you will play a crucial role in formulating and executing forest management and strategic plans as well as assisting with the bureaus land acquisition initiatives. Your duties will also include gathering and analyzing forest inventories statistics and feedback from the public and stakeholders. You will coordinate forest planning efforts with other agencies and within the Bureau review and provide input on proposed legislation regulations policies and research that impact forest management and State Forest lands and engage in support activities that contribute to the development and upkeep of various projects related to the management of State Forest lands.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Fulltime employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday Friday with a 30minute lunch.
  • Occasional travel and overtime is required as needed
  • Telework:You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) parttime up to 5 days per pay period. In order to telework you must have a securely configured highspeed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary:In some cases the starting salary may be nonnegotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience as a Forester (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title as determined by the Office of Administration);or
  • Two years of experience as a Forest Nursery Assistant Manager (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title as determined by the Office of Administration);or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which affords the applicant the required knowledges skills and abilities.


Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid motor vehicle operators license of the proper class for the vehicles operated as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
