Job Description

Position: Certified Educational ASL Interpreter 40 hours per week/10 months)

Cambridge Rindge & Latin School/World Languages Department

The Role:

The educational ASL interpreters primary function is to facilitate communication among students and staff districtwide who are deaf or hard of hearing their hearing peers colleagues and other personnel in the school system. The educational ASL interpreter provides interpreting and support services to students and staff who are deaf or hard of hearing and are being educated or teaching with Cambridge Public Schools. Other duties that may be performed when they do not interfere with interpreting include tutoring participation in meetings and being an active member of the schools educational team. This position reports directly to the JK12 World Language Director.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to providing expressive and voice interpretation for students or staff who are deaf or hard of hearing in the educational setting (this may include American Sign Language Manually Coded English Pidgin Signed English and/or Oral Interpreting). Collaborating with the classroom teacher/supervisor provide tutoring/review services as necessary for students who are deaf or hard of hearing when it does not interfere with the task of interpreting. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the setup of note taking services for students/staff who are deaf or hard of hearing when necessary.
  • Participating in educational team activities either in person or via a report. Activities may include but are not limited to team meetings Individualized Education Program (IEP) conferences and/or informal staffing.
  • Serving as a liaison between staff who are deaf or hard of hearing hearing peers staff and faculty members.
  • Providing and or assisting in providing inservices to hearing students staff and parents as requested in regard to sign language deafness Deaf culture interpreting and consumer education.
  • Interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom extracurricular activities and parent meetings when requested in advance.
  • Maintaining professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the national
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

  • Ability to work after school hours when needed.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Your Skill Set:

As the incoming Educational ASL Interpreter you will possess many though perhaps not all of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree
  • Fluency in ASL and English
  • Deaf interpreter training including specialized training and knowledge of meeting unique communication modes.
  • Follow standard practices and ethical decision making in accordance with the Registry of
  • Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct and the Standard Practice Papers.
  • Minimum of one to five years of experience as a working interpreter or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Must demonstrate sufficient linguistic fluency and cognitive flexibility
  • Advanced cultural knowledge of the Deaf community and its resources is required
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience in a diverse K12 setting.

Terms of Employment:

This is a fulltime 10 month/40 hours a week position. The position includes a generous benefits package and is eligible for the Cambridge Retirement System.

Salary: $59820 $68366 annually
